Dr. James W. Curlin deputy assistant secretary of land and water resources for the U.S. Department of the Interior, was named the 20th recipient of the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. Curlin was honored at commencement exercises May 16, 1980. A native of Pine Bluff, Curlin graduated from: UAM in 1954 after receiving a bachelor of science degree in forestry. He holds a masters degree in soil science and a doctorate in science from Louisiana State University and a juris doctorate in law from the University of Tennessee. In his position with the Department of the Interior, Curlin oversees the programs of the Bureau of Land Management, coordinates the siting and permitting of the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline, and represents the Interior Department on various government and non- government activities. Curlin has held positions in both public and private for forest research. He is a former district forester in charge of timber management for the Kirby Lumber corporation in Cleveland, Tex., and served as forest manager for International Paper Company in Minden, La. In 1964, he joined the staff of the Oak Ridge (Tennessee) National Laboratory as associate director and research Chancellor Taylor presents Dr. James W. For the next 6 years, Curlin provided information and assessments to Congress on policy issues dealing with natural resources, science, energy, and the environment.
