His speech resembled his televised investigation in that it was laced with down home humor and quotations from Shakespeare and the Bible. He stressed the maintenance of ‘‘eternal vigilance’ on the part of the American people in order to protect the freedom of the individual, which he labeled as ‘‘the earth’s most precious value.”’ He demonstrated his willingness to defend these freedoms in World War. 1, as he was wounded twice and cited for gallantry in action during his service in France.
