M. is very proud of its musicians. The concert band and the Drum and Bugle Corps are made up from students from every high school in the state and the surrounding states. Very few colleges have Concert bands, but we have one that we are proud to say will equal the best. Nothing will win the attention of a crowd quicker than a marching band dressed in colorful uniforms. There is nothing so beautiful as a parade of beautiful girls dressed in red and gold. Not only are these girls attractive, but they can actually play good music on their drums and bugles. We owe a lot to Fred and Clarence for the skillful way in which they guided these girls along the path to the good musicians that they are today. Several nation-wide stories on the team appeared in hundreds of daily newspapers. Feature articles on the team appeared in several of the largest papers in the country, including The New York Times, The New York Herald-Tribune, The Pittsburg Press, and The Los An- geles Times. Collier’s Magazine headlined the team with millions of readers in an article by Kyle Crichton. Almost miraculously and without precedent in the his- tory of American football, the Arkansas A. and M. Team became one of the nation’s most famed teams. Newspapers, athletic directors, school superinten- dents, and college presidents stated that the ‘’Boll Weevils’’ introduced a new theory of football which may revolutionize American football. A New York sports writer wrote that the team had given, ‘‘the most unique contribution ever made to college football.’ In spite of losing more games than winning and coming from a small college in a little-recognized section of the United States, the team attracted the attention of the entire United States—an achievement never before duplicated. Everywhere the team played, it won the crowds with its spectacular, clean, and original style of play. To see a group of boys playing football solely because they liked to and enjoying every minute of every game whether winning, losing, or tying was a_ refreshing spectacle to most fans. The season opened with a game with Louisiana College in Pineville. Although losing, the Weevils were asked back for a game next fall after they had attracted the largest opening game crowd in a number of years. ieee CHESHIER Quarterback Monticello, Ark. 2. The team played two games on their next trip to the eastern part of the United States; the first, with Eastern Kentucky Teachers in Richmond, Kentucky, and the next, with Lebanon Valley College in Hershey, Pennsyl- vania. Several large cities were visited including Pitts- burg, Washington, Baltimore, and Nashville. The boys enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the Hershey Choco- late Company for several days and had full opportunity to enjoy their stay in one of the most beautiful spots in the nation. Hans Groenhoff, ace photographer for ee ees and Life Magazine, travelled with the team for a day. Two days after the return from the East, the team started on its trip to the West, playing the first game at Denton, Texas. During the following week, the team saw the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, the Rocky Mountains, and many other scenic spots. Three days were spent in Los Angeles and Hollywood where the team visited many of the show places, saw many movie stars, and went through Warner Brothers Studio. The team visited with Bob Burns and were his guests both at his home and at the broadcasting studio. One of the brightest events of the trip was the dating party which the boys enjoyed with a group of U.C.L.A. girls, including several who appear in pictures. Leaving Hollywood, the team travelled through the Orange groves and grape vineyards of California and up the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Reno, Nevada, where a game was played with the University of Nevada. AI- though the game was lost, the boys soon forgot the defeat in the liveliest and most rapidly-moving city in America. The most exciting travel of the season came next as the team drove to the coast. Winding through gorges, climbing past Mt. Lassen, skirting Mt. Shasta, and creeping around the peaks of the Sierras on the narrow roads carved from the side of the mountains gave the boys probably their greatest thrills. On reaching the coast, the team lost to California State in a driving rain storm. Hurriedly, the team started on their next leg of the trip, covering sixteen hundred miles of mountain and desert in the next four days to reach Rapid City in time for their game with the School of Mines. The Boll Weevils won this game in one of the best and most spectacular displays of football ever seen in the state. Fifteen hundred miles were travelled in the next three days, reaching home at midnight before playing Hendrix College the next afternoon. The Boll Weevils lost to Hendrix in the last three minutes of play after holding them to the closest game between the two teams in the past ten years. During the three weeks, the team play- ed five games interspersed between seven thousand miles of bus travel—an endurance record which has probably never been equalled by an American college football team. After a short rest, the team made another eastern trip, playing in New York City and in Springfield, Missouri. A number of colleges and universities were visited on the trip which included a number of interest- ing miles of travel up the Atlantic Coast. While in New York, enjoying the thrills of a large city, the team received large amounts of publicity from most of the New York newspapers. The last game was played with North-West Miss- issippi College whom the Aggies defeated by a score of 28 to O in one of the best exhibitions of orthodox foot- ball ever seen on the local field. The ‘“Marx Brothers of Football’’ proved to their supporters that they could play good, straight football and win when they wished. eg nema” ost f on 5 oF Se ee ae. oe er 1. The college fraternity is somewhat : unique; it is an organization of which every member is proud and for which every brother | ‘ has labored. On January 14, 1940 a group of Phi Lambda Chi fraternity men from Arkansas State Teachers College at Conway, Arkansas, came to Arkansas A. M. College to install the baby organization on our campus, the Gamma Chapter of Phi Lambda Chi Fraternity. On that date ten men were initiated, who wee to make and did make Gamma Chapter a major organization on our campus. Since that time Gamma has initiated thirty-four outstanding men of our college, who rank high in their respective chosen field and likewise enjoy a position of leadership and distinction on our campus. The men of Phi Lambda Chi 1940-41 will turn through these pages in later years and remember old friends, who, together with themselves helped to build this chapter in its younger years. They will remember the anniversary banquet, January 12, celebrating the progress of this first year. A } ‘Gel LEVERITT, WALLICK, BURNHAM f jf y ve INTRAMURAL ATHLETICS t i BMA a re } Living up to tradition, the year’s program of intramural athletics surpassed all previous ones in participation, competition and interest. Un- der the leadership of Mrs. Peggy Wallick, J. P. Leveritt, and student assist- ants, the program blossomed into one of a wide field of sports. Intramural activities of one phase or the other were in order at all times during the year. One of the biagest factors in the success and interest of soorts was the formation of intramural teams according to living quarters and clubs. Six teams composed of practically every college man enrolled at A. and M. competed in intramural football basketball, volley ball, tennis, soccorball, ping pona, badminton, softball, track and baseball. Five women’s teams took part in such sports as tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball, soft- ball and archery. The College is well equipped for these sports. Ample ground is pro- vided for the playing of each of the sports. The National Guard Armory provides plenty of space for intramural games of tennis, badminton, bas- ketball, volleyball, and table tennis. The Aces, strong intramural football team, defeated the Sigma Tau Gammas team in the finals, thereby winning the title of intramural football champions. The Grapes of Wrath, were crowned intramural basketball champions by their victory over the Aces. Intramural activities have succeeded in reaching every student on A. and M.'s campus, and much spirit has been shown during the past season. oe PHYSICAL EDUCATION The Physical Education department of Arkansas A. and M. College has pushed a wider, more varied program this year under the direction of Mr. Stewart Ferguson, Mrs. L. O. Wallick, and J. P. Leveritt. With the aid of the intramural council, a group of team captains and student coaches, the department has been able to extend the benefits of physical education to nearly every student in the college. Such sports, stunts, and games as soccer, touch football, softball, basketball, wrestling, box- ing, ping pong, tumbling, adagio, tennis, badminton, aerial darts, folk dancing, fencing, volleyball, and archery were in- cluded in the program. Four definite forms of Physical Education were used: PERVERT I WALLICK 1. History and principles of Health and Physical Education. 2. Intercollegiate Athletics. 3. Rhythmics and gymnastics. 4. Games and sports. Special activities were tumbling trips to El Dorado and Smackover; participation in the A. A. U. Wrestling meet in Little Rock; entrance in play day at Arkansas Polytechnic College, Russellville. ADAGIO DANCING PYRAMID 2. TUMBLING 4. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 6. Membership in the group is offered to all football players who earn the letter ‘“A’’. The purpose of the club is to Promote interest among the players and students. The members of the club each year make and enforce a rule that no letter, exceot the letter “A” may be worn on the campus. With the successful reorganization, we know that it will continue to be a thriving club throughout the coming years. kk WHO’S WHO Among Students in American Colleges and Universities 1—Marjorie Mae Ingram Lela Mae Rodgers—5 2—Earl Cooper Louise Williams—6 3—Mildred Johnson Thomas Tucker— 7 4—-Frances Lyle Inez Ridge—8 ORGIGERS Maries Gastlebertys = eee President Helen Wells x Pianist Mary Colon Etheridge _Ist Vice President James Sawyer —_ Chorister Durward Mosley _____ 2nd Vice President Leo Daniels __ Representative to Council Ruby Lee Griswood ___ 3rd Vice President Wm.
