ARKANSAS CHILDR 25 EN'S HOSPITAL From 1967 to 1969, the Arkansas Child- ren's Hospital expanded from a 62 to a 94 bed facility. In 1968, the hospital cared for 5000 children in the clinics. There were 1300 inpatients and 900 of these had sur- gery. The hospital is an active participant in Little Rock's intern and resident training programs. Interns, residents, and acting in- terns in orthopedics and pediatrics spend part of their time at Children's during their training. New additions to the hospital include a new physical therapy department and a new outpatient clinic area. The X-ray department has been expanded two and one-half times. Four new surgical suites and a new Burn Center have been added. New mother-child rooms have been opened on the third f1oor wing.

This has been due mainly to increased numbers of qualified staff. Improvement of the total program, together with training programs in psychiatry, affiliate nursing and in-service training program for nursing personnel, have contributed to the upgrading of treatment. The Community Mental Health Program was begun in July, 1967. At that time only 5 counties were receiving mental health services. Now 40 Arkansas counties are receiving some form of mental health service. This is provided by professionals from the State Hospital, the VA Hospitals, the Medical Center, and private physicians. There are now four compre- hensive mental health centers and seven community units.
