D. The Seven Ages of Medicine The divine art, Gift of God, for the Sacred books of all religion impart fragments of inspirational knowledge for the healing of mang thus, as far back as the faintest dawn of history have the inspired ones handed down by tradition and writings, precepts and rules, for the practice of medicine. For there are Seven Epochs of Medicine, and the evolvement of these periods is almost as wonderful as the Seven Periods of Creation. EPOCH ONE, SACRED Moses, the great law giver of the Chosen People, whose youth had been spent in that classic land of Egypt, had obtained all the knowledge of that Ancient Priesthood: Moses, the Heirophant, led a nation out of bondage into a promised land. By direct instruction from God, amid the lightnings of Sinai, he wrote a system of laws faside from sacred ideasl which have proved to be the most perfect ever devised for the Hygienic. betterment of Man EPOCH TWO PHILOSOPHICAL Next comes before us the master a Grecian H1ppOCF3t8S The Great whose lectures on Mediclne as embodied in his works give us marvelous insight into the symptoms of disease both individual and ep1 demic So that he may Justlv be called the Father of Symptomatology He emphasized the so called Humeral theory which has persisted 1n all schools to this day Then the sublime nobleness of the H1ppOCF3tlC Oath that masterpiece for the guidance and pract1ce of the true Physician would alone entitle him to eternal remembrance by the Medical Professlon EPOCH THREE ANATOMICAL PERIOD This period one of immense research especially in Anatomy and Physiology easily brings to us the revered name of Galen the father of Medicine who gathered to himself all the scattered threads of Medical Knowledge and w1th these as a frame and his own laborious studies and d1ssect1ons wove the ground fabric of scientific medicine He although thwarted and persecuted by a hostile world forbidden to use the human body for purposes of study amassed an immense quantity of practical knowledge for a grateful posterity The very fran' works of modern treat ment are called Galenlcal preparations Seventy e1ght nu' Ilmlll 9'Ni:::uIl:i"'lllll"" l""wl:::i' Iii., . The medical art has increased in exactness until we can see the immediate rise of the splendid sun of exact Science. Theories are disappearing, Empiricism is dying out and the theorems of medicine will be as easily demonstrated as Mathematics. Late in the nineteenth century France brought forth a Biologist, whose discovery, like a flaming sword, destroyed myriads of the unseen foes of humanity. Louis Pasteur with indomitable will, whose watchword was "Toil", announced to a wondering world the infectious cause of disease by Bacteria. The keynote of modern medicine is preven- tion and this article can be closed in no more appropriate words than those of Pasteur himself. , "Two opposing laws seem to me to be in contest, the one, a law of blood and death, opening out each day new modes of destruction.--The other a law of peace, Work and health, whose only aim is to deliver man from the calamities which beset him. The law, of which we are the instruments, strives ever through the carnage to cure all wounds.----Treatment by antiseptic methods and prevention may preserve the lives of thousands.- --But of this we may be sure that Science in obeying the law of human- ity will always strive to enlarge the frontiers of life." 5 C Eighty J. When it comes to this chin music proposition, I have never found man, Woman, or dictaphone who could get first base on me, either fancy or catch-as-catch-can.
