FINE ARTS The Fine Arts Division at UALR is under the direction of Dr. John R. Hughes. The four departme-nts are Music, Theater, Speech Communication, andArt. The Music Department, headed by Dr. Hughes, has instituted this year a chamber orchestra conducted by Ms. Mary belle Nissly CMM. USAF, Ret.j. The TheaterDepartment, directed by Mr. Clifford H. Haislip, offered a new course in the fall and spring semesters. The course is titled "Dance for Theater" and is taught at the Arkansas Arts Center by Mr. Manolo Agullo. The Speech and Hearing Clinic is a very important part of the department, Dr. Gray says it has grown tremendously in its first year. The clinic serves students, faculty, and faculty families, and there is "a great quantity of usage," according to Dr. Gray. The clinic was accredited this year by the American Speech and Hearing Clinic Association. Dr. Jim Montague is director. The Art Department, directed by Mr. Alvin L. Allen, is looking forward to newfacilities in the East Building. Adequate studio space will be providedfor painting, drawing, and pottery classes, and the curriculum will be expanded to include more upper-level courses. JOHN G. Tlzree objectives ofthe teacher education prog- ram are designed as a means toward that end. One ofthose objectives is to provide instruction and guidance for prospective early childhood, elementary, and secondary school teachers. In the spring semester ofl973, 515 UALR stu- dents had asserteda major in education and are currently pursuing a study course toward becoming teachers in a specializedfield. Another objective is to cooperate with public school ojjicials at state and local levels in programs ofprofessional growth and supervision for in-service teachers and school service personnel. This semester 180 UA LR collegiates are activating the third objective by doing their student teaching in cooperatin elemen- tary and secondary schools. That objective, the securement of facilities and provision ofsupervisors for professional laboratory experiences, will hopejitlly materialize thisfall on the UA LR cam- pus in the form ofa day care center. Students in the .several academic departments are encouraged to study the literature utilized in their classes as the embodiment ofimpor- tant thoughts and the ways ofexpressing them. This is true not only in ,English and the several other languages, but also in philosophy, religion, andjournalism. The Division faculty has virtually doubled in the past three years, with most additional personnel possessing the doctorate at this time and teaching in areas oftheir respective specialties. Literature courses in English, French, and Spanish are pro- gressively varied as the Division grows. Philosophy courses are gradually expanding to implement the major. Journalism courses became available in new areas in 1971-72, and a prokssional languages laboratory specialist gives nearly jill-time direction to thatfacility. Courses within the Division lead toward degrees in-five depart- ments, a degree in Humanities, and certification of elementary and secondary school teaching. Tlwlfzu-airy members manUest unusual .strength in their respec- tive fields, bringing competence and challenging leadership to the classroom. JOHNYE E. "The Department of Nursing is now receiving .government capitation grants for the purpose 'of helping retain students who are academically disadvantaged. We are developing methods ofaudiovisual teach- ing aids, including a video-tape recorder for recording medical and technical procedures, and we are offering special help by tutoring small groups of students who would otherwise be lost through dropping out." Dr. Sinclair said the Nursing Department had already hired one full-time and one part-time "special help" ttutoringj instruc- tors. et . ,z?,w m f' A CLARENCE B. W jg, .Q--, g f s 'A- j g fe' -' -' .. rx, PHYSICAL SCIENCE and MATHEMATICS Expansion is the word in the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics - both during the past year and in the years ahead. The Spring 1973 semester was the first to offer courses tying medicine and music to physics - two new courses, "Medical Physics" and "Musical Acoustics", were born. In addition, the astronomy program, which is now comprised of one general freshman-level course, will be vastly improved with the construc- tion ofa planetarium on campus. The Department ofEngineering, which currently offers a max- imum ofthree years toward a degree, will become eitherfull-time engineering or convert to an engineering technology program fgeneral engineering with an emphasis on urban problemsj. The greatest obstacle facing expansion of the UALR engineering program is the engineering school at Fayetteville, which already ojfers a degree program as well as graduate work. Starting thisfallgeology will be offered -the Division is looking for an instructor now. The future looks bright for the Division, which will have no trouble keeping pace with the school's expansion. There were 800 Business Administration majors in 1971 and the present total is 1120. Dr. James Butler attributed this growth to tlze improving quality of programs and also the improving variety tlzat is available in tlze division. Since UALR has attained University status, most ofthe changes in the department have been in the scope ofthe instruc- tional role. Plans for additional equipment include new machines in the machines and typewriting labs and the establishment ofa compu- ter and qualitative methods lab. The latter will provide not only classroom but research projects involving the use of computers by students. The department offers a Bachelor ofBusiness Administration degree in Advertising, Economics, Finance, Management and Labor, and Marketing: and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. '71, 57"- There aren't many people around who can claim to be long- time followers and supporters ofthe UALR Trfjan basketball team, but of those who can, most would agree that the 1972-73 season was the best the team has ever had. To prove the point, they need only point to the 15-I0 season record and the 24 new team records and the I3 new individual records set this year. The Trojans came out oftheir schedule against schools hom Arkansas and neighboring .states with a new high average in scoring per game of85.8 points, almost seven points above the average of their opponents. On the way they established new season standardsfor the most totalpoints t2,127j, most rebounds tI,520j, most assists f524j, and HW the best averages per game in all three categories. The broken marks can't all be counted as roses howeverg this year's squad managed a new low in free throws made in any one game l-41. The 15 players who made the year what it was achieved a lot on their own. They amounted to eight returnees from last year's efj?2rt, five junior college transfers, and two freshmen. Senior Charlie Johnson stood out among the record-breakers, setting a new average in rebounds per game ofI7.3. He nabbed 364 altogether andseveral new career marksfor the school. That's quite a fear when you realile that he was out fir a couple of weeks with a bruised shoulder. The year was not creditable-for only one man, though, because seven members of the squad topped 100 points total in scoring and two topped 400. iv.. 1 QL,gf,f ' QJ I I Charlie Hoyt, Tim Ezgi. Others beside the players made the year memorable. There was the quite vocal group ofhont-row fans who were always ready to engage the referees at the tweet of a whistle. There were the cheerleaders. They even held a Homecoming with racial overtones ana' oratory to match, courtesy the BUS. And, as always, there were the team ojjlicialsx head coach Happy Mah- fouz, assistant coach Elroy Woodard, manager and statistician Charlie Hoyt, trainer Larry Levy, scorerjerry Pittman, and sports information director and announcer Mark Bird. But Maltfoug and Woodard have been recruiting. Wora' has it they've clone quite a job, so now those wl1o say this was the best year yet might even be macle to agree that next year will be even better. When springtime Came around, it brought along a very .strange season for the Trojan baseball squad. The team was under a new coach and was in faet very mueh a new team itsehf because only five lettermen returned from the previous year and only three of them made it through the season. It was strange, too, in that the Trojans played more games in 1973 than any Trojan team before and yet the torrential spring rains washed them out of3l seheclulecl encounters. The sc'hea'ule had been originally set up to yiela' a 60-game season. The team as a whole managed a new high in home runs over the season of 21. Individually, Billy Bryant ripped the single season hitting mark to 25, set a new total bases earned record, and led the team in home runs this year with six. He batted .322 and had 11 RB1's. At the Hendrix College Relays, the Trojans ranked fourth out of 13 teams, finishing just barely behind their archrival and host, Hendrix, in scoring decided by the final event. In January and February Came the dual meet schedule, one highlight being tlze inauguration ofSCA 's new pool. That Contest left tlze Bears high and dry with I2 ofthe 13 initial pool records being set by Trojan swimmers. Seven team records were rewritten in thatperiod. One was tlze 400-yard medley relay mark which was reduced to 3.'57.6. Sammy Turner lowered two of his times and one ofthe Sha Williamson 's in the 200, 500, and 1000-yard jreestyles. Right, and you didn't even know there was a golfteam, did you? You're damn right there's a goh' team. And they haven't had a losing season under coach Dudley Beard the eight years they've played. The Trojan men ofthe links have been state champ- ions six times and have gone to the NAIA Nationals six times. The total record in dual meets for the eight years is IO6-23-3, almost a quarter ofthe wins being over out-of-state competition. This season holed-out with an airtight ll-0-0, not counting two impressivefinishes in out-of-state tourneys, namelyjifth in afield ofl2 in the Galveston Island Inter- collegiate Classic andfourth of14 at the Holiday in Dixie get-together. The Trojans rather handily downed their eight com- petitors in the AIC tournament. Steve Ralston was the tourney medalist. They capped the season in June with an llth-place team finish at the NAIA National Tournament in South Carolina. Most likely they'll make it next yearfor appear- ance number seven. WH, spa a: ' Q is X While on the subject of successhil sports, Ed Gran suffered a losing season in 1968 in l1is first year as coach ofthe varsity tennis team,' the nextfour years were winn- ing years for lzis players. Four times they represented UALR at the NAIA Nations in Kansas City, twice as District I7 team champions and twice with two singles and one doubles in competition. The year 1969 even spawned an NA IA All-A merican-hir UALR fPhil Mehlin, ofcoursej. In 1972, Gran was informed by the Administration that he would not be coaching tl1e team the next year. The team was assigned to the baseball coaclz, giving him two spring sports to direct. Three ofthe '72 season's top four seeds eligible to return did 1101 re-enroll in '73. The already-scheduled season was cancelled. In 1973, aherfour consecutive winning seasons, there was no varsity tennis team at UALR.
