The fundamental idea of two-year college education has survived, and Westark has offered a comprehen- sive program to its community, Within its budgetary framework, the college continues to support needed programs that provide marketable job skills and academic training. lts past record and its promising future continue to offer the citizens of West- ern Arkansas "so much, for so little," Westark is situated on 44 acres in the eastern part of Fort Smith. The modern, well-equipped facilities provide an attractive scenic addition to the community. The campus includes nine buildings providing students and members of the community with quality, Iawecast educational opportunities. The facilities offer classes in university parallel programs, vocational-techni cal training, and community service classes and programs. Westark has been a model for other community college campuses throughout the state and is recog- nized for its quality and example throughout the nation. If you're six, 60, or 106-you'd fit right in at the Westark campus. The student population is diverse, as it should be, because Westark is a colf lege committed to its community. infants in cribs can be seen in the Child Development Center. The Child Center begins to work with them building minds and personalities, while their parents do the some in academic or technical classrooms elsewhere. In another classroom you might see students upwards of 60 years of age, all learning, all seeking more in life. Shoulder to shoulder, walking the paths of the campus will be laborers, professionals, Welders and physicians. Westark offers universityfparallel courses, providing local students a chance to begin college right at home. There are both one and twosyear technical programs in a variety of fields. And the community services pro- gram meets vocational needs, cred ative desires and provides fun activif ties for all ages, too, Westark-it's a vital part of the com- munity as it touches thousands of lives each year. Westark's Oo full time instructors avere age ii years of teaching experience. Their degrees are from 152 different institutions in 85 states and three for- eign countries. Westark also uses many part time instructors, who bring to the campus an understanding of business and in- dustry. Nineteen non-teaching professionals and 13 administrators provide direct support for faculty and students. All of these, plus a dedicated clerical and maintenance staff, work togeth- er to make Westark a place where effective teaching and learning takes place. Westark is a quality institution which keeps an open ear to its community. This flexibility allows Westark to ref spond heartily when someone in the community sees an educational need. lt's that response to its people that makes Westark a leader. The Westark community is a fine place to live, to learn and to grow. lt's a "happening," 151 Fashions Clothes hoppenings . . . whotever suits the mood! There wos o renewed interest in student's needs ond with it come the construction of the Fullerton Union, Breedlove ond Gordner Buildings. As the compus exponded to better serve students, the students themselves were chonging. Foshion trends chonged drosticolly in the 1970's with slsitt lengths dropping from on inch below the hips to on inch obove the floor ond everywhere in between, The only telioble otticle of clothing seemed to be the everpopulor ond undying blue jeons. But even they hoven't stoyed the some. Lorge belled legs, hip-huggers, boggies ond stroight legs hove seen greot chonge over the decode. Music, which is o big port of neorly every student's life hos seen gteot chonge, too. It hos groduolly gone from the Beotles singing "Let it Be" to new ond sometimes controvetsiol groups such os Journey ond Kiss. As the 70's progressed Westorlx begon offering closses for senior citizens ond high school students. In 1975 the school inducted o new heod odministrotor os Dt. Jomes Kroby become the president. ln the ten yeor spon student enrollment doubled ond Westotls wos designoted Atlsonsos' fostest growing community college. 1978 found Westorls, its students, stoff ond odministrotors celebtot- ing the school's 50th onniversoty. lt wos truly U50 ond feelin' good." In the finol yeor of the decode on enrollment record wos set for the foll semester with 8,565 full time students. As the decode neored its finol doys ond most people begon reminiscing obout the "good ole doys" there wos o sense of sodness in soying goodbye to the decode thot brought so much to Westotls.
