They need your friendship. Your life is enlarged in proportion to the friendships you have, to the knowledge which people have of your own virtues. Your task in life is immeasurably simplified when people think you are a, friend, for they learn 01-ily from Q those whom they like. No one has ever been known to treas- ure the rich intellectual nuggets which his enemy gave to him. A good life always depends on the number of friends you have, and it will continue to be this way. 2' -YQ! The sources do not matter but the thoughts may well be remembered. ". . .no man knows better than himself what it is that he can do and he does not know until he has tried. . . " ". . .the man who does no more with his life than provide for his own material desires may as well not have lived. . . " ". . .the man who performs a real service to mankind will not go unpaid..." In simple words this says: Have confidence in yourself, consider material things as the subordinate issues in life, and serve others in whatever you do. Educate yourself with these thoughts in mind and you need have no fear of the future. Best wishes for a long, prosperous, and happy life. Sincerely yours , E. T. JIM BRAGAN - 5'11" Freshman Forward from Fort Smith Probably the fastest moving player on the squad, Jim's fierce determination, dogged persistence, and will to win earned him a place on the traveling squad during the latter part of the season. His fine attitude and cooperative spirit earned him an even finer spot in the hearts of his lE53.l'I'1Il'l3ICS. , if Y, Joe GELZINE - e'4 1f2" Freshmanxlxxx Center from Fort Smith ix 'Q xug Altho lacking in experience, Joe became one of the best Lion post players in years. His fierce determination, aggressive board play, and unerring jump shot lifted him to the second spot in Lion scoring during the season. His 43 points against Sayre J.C. set a new individual single game scoring record for Lion players. Joe's height, weight, and experience figure prominently in the Lion's hopes for another Conference Championship diiring the 1959-60 season. JOHN ENGLAND - 6'1" Freshman Forward from Fort Smith With no previous high school experience , Johnny developed throughout the season to the point where he showed tre- mendous potential. His terrific jumping ability and his smooth movements on the floor give him a fine chance at the starting five next year. SIDNEY MARTIN - 5'1l" Freshman Guard from Fort Smith Sid's dogged determination to excell and improve made him the most improved member of the Lion squad. Though participating very little in actual competition, Sid dis- played the spirit of team play, being always ready when called upon. Further improvement of the kind shown during the 1958-59 season make Sid a fine guard candidate for next year. CHARLES LOUM - 5'11" Sophomore Guard from Fort Smith With no high school experience whatever, "Lum" pro- gressed to one of the starting guard positions with the loss of Giddens. His fiery defensive play, aggressive driving layups, and uncanny ability to feed the open player made him a fine asset to the squad. His enthusiasm and team spirit made hisvalue to the team immeasurable. Because of his value he was named a letterman in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. LEWIS GRIFFITH - 6'1" Freshman Forward from Charleston Lackinghigh school experience and forced to spend more time in studying, Lew was lost to the squad at the end of the first semester. Using an accurate one-handed push shot and rebounding extremely well, Lew showed his potential for next season. , ,..,,,--.-s sv .-1, -.fe Z 1 1 --gg-,.-0 Q.---e-..p.....-.4 Q-U11 n ' - o 1 JAMES HUMPHREY - 6'1" Freshman Guard from Roland, Oklahoma Probably the best defensive player on the squad, "Humph's" inability to round into condition prevented his regular play with the Lions. His rugged defense and great desire make him a good candidate for next season. RON GREEN - 6'3" Sophomore P Forward from Lavaca Ron's tremendous jump shot, delicate tip-ins, and USB- mendous rebounding made him the leading scorer on the Lion squad and second -high scorer in Lion history. Because of his aggressive play, pinpoint passing, and leadership abilities, he was elected Captain of the 1958-59 squad by his teammates. A two year letterman, Ron will be sorely missed next season. rr ' 1 hp VI, ,f I v',':" ., 4 ' K M f f v ,V lf 1: BILL Moss 4- Freshman 6'1" Forward from Fort Smith A fine defensive man, determined floor player, and a good outside shooter, Bill developed into a fine player during the second semester. His tremendous potential make him a leading prospect for the 1959-60 edition of the Lions. DEWEY SI-IOCKLEY - 6'4", 200 pound Center from Waldron Afflicted with leg trouble throughout the first semester and never quite rounding into condition, Shock became one of the finest rebounders during the second semester. I-lis aggressive work under the basket and his tremendous desire put him in good position for a starting berth next year. in. -fi!!! JAMES REYNOLDS - 6'2" Freshman From Fort Smith With no high school basketball background, James became a very fine addition to the Lion squad and contributed greatly to its success. One of the fine rebounders and jump shooters, Jim never said "quit" at any time. His tremendous potentialand scoring ability make him a lead- ing candidate for the starting forward berth next season. JIM WYATT - 6'O" Sophomore Guard from Branch Selected by his teammates as Co-Captain for the 1958- 59 season, Jim's performance as the teal-n's outside man was tremendous. His fast-break layups, close in jump shots, quick feeds to breaking men, and untiring defensive play-made him one of the mostvaluable men on the squad. Anxious to take the toughest of the opponents to guard, Jim was happiest when holding a potentially high scorer to almost nothing. His fine play and leadership ability, tho a great loss to next year's Lions, will be a great ad- dition to another team somewhere. RALPH VINES - 6'4", 180 pound Center from Greenwood His sweeping left-handed hook shot, tough rebounding and fine defensive play soon earned Ralph a starting berth' in his first semester. His determination to learn to play defense made him most valuable throughout the season. Teaming with Gelzine at the post positions, he became the third leading scorer on the Lion squad. A letterman his freshman year, he is expected to produce even greater feats next season. GEORGE TALKINGTON - 6'1" Freshman Center from Lavaca By far the best ball-handling post man on the squad and with a knack for moving about quite freely with the big men under the basket, George was extremely valuable to the Lion team throughout the season. At his very best with defensive men all about him, his fine passes set up many Lion baskets by his teammates. Although only 6'1" , George was his happiest when clearing a rebound of the backboards, a feat he accomplished with regularity. George is almost assured a starting berth next season after his fine play this year. ,J-.., ,UN we -W DANA DOOLY - Student Manager Lavaca Sidelined by a knee operation during the 1957-58 season, Dana assumed the duties as squad "stooge" when the knee failed to respond this season. His interest, enthusiasm, experience, and attentiveness to Lion players contributed greatly to the success of this year's team. A great ball player in his own right, Dana never complained at not being able to play. Such spirit and team interestexempli- fied the role of the true "stooge" whose motto is "Keep 'em ready for play!" T958-T959 SEASON STATISTICAL SUMMARY V2 E2 F22 F222 V2 2 2 L W L L W L L W.
