But when Dean ended up being more talk than anything else, Kerry won the right to challenge George W. Bush. RUSH LIMBAUGH The conservative radio talk show host had a tough year. First he was fired from his gig on ESNP for being accused of making racist comments. Next, it was revealed he was addicted to prescription drugs. Liberals jumped on the chance to attack Limbaugh. MARTHA STEWART The homemaker honey faced prison time after being found guilty on four counts of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about a well-timed stock sale. While Stewart ' s lawyers struggled to get her off, the former stock broker struggled to save her billion dollar company. Faces of the year PRESIDENT BUSH A struggling economy and trouble in Iraq made Bush a vulnerable incumbent president. While the former Texas governor toured the country promoting his poli- cies, Democrats made every attempt they could to attack the president on his domes- tic and foreign agenda. SCOTT PETERSON Facing the death penalty if found guilty of killing his pregnant wife Lade, Peter- son hired top notch lawyers to plead his case. Mean- while, Washington passed legislation making it a double crime to kill a woman carry- ing a child. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER Republican action star Schwarzenegger was able to oust liberal Democrat Gov. Gary Davis with a moderate message. KOLBE BRYANT The basketball player ' s career was on the line as he faced accusations of rape. UP, UP, UP Gas station attendant Reyes Cortez posts gasoline prices, Aug. 29, 2003, at a station in Beverly Hills, Calif. Motorists who hadn ' t tanked up lately were in for an unpleasant surprise: Gasoline prices hit record highs in many parts of the country.
