TOM ANSBERRY BORN: August 22, 1963 Okinawa, Japan HOMETOWN: Tucson, Az. HIGH SCHOOL: Santa Rita Tucson, Az. MAJOR: Watershed Management and Hydrology SPORT: Track and Cross Country I, PLAYER PROFILE ANSBERRY Junior Tom Ansberry knows well the long road to becoming a champion. Ans- berry began his trek at age 11 when an elementary school teacher began a running pro- gram at his school. By age 13 he had set a world record in his age group by logging a 2:43 time in a marathon. Since then Ansberry has de- creased his mileage, but not his pace. As a Santa Rita junior, Ansberry won the state cross country championship. He repeated the feat his senior year and added the mile and two-mile state titles to his name. Ansberry, a junior, added his talents to the Wildcats in 1982. He has committed himself to a rigid schedule of running 80-90 miles a week, lifting weights three times a week, and studying in be- tween. " I really have to bud- get my time, " he said. That included squeezing extra workouts between school | work. On a normal day he I rushed from class to the 3 locker room to change, run, shower, then back to class. In his occasional free-time Ansberry liked to catch a good movie and eat pizza his answer to the fuel of champions. The dedication has pro- duced continued success for Ansberry. He raced through the cold Pennsylvania weather at the NCAA cross country championships and crossed the tape fifth. His high placement, plus the im- pressive finishes of his teammates gave the team a second place trophy. Ans- berry also finished first at the PAC-10 meet. Ansberry hoped to contin- ue running competitively after he graduated in 1986. In January 1984 he set a US record for 20-year olds in a Phoenix roadrace with a 28:36 10-K time. He also placed seventh at the Olym- pic trials and was working for a spot on the 1988 Olympic team. " Right now, " said Ansberry, " I ' m just thinking about the present and the National Championships. " PROFILES 185
