THE PREPPIE STYLE remained popular in 1984, with penny loafers becoming second only to tennis shoes at UA shoe stores. NEW WAVE FASHIONS rose in pop- ularity with some UA students, both at school and out on the town. CAMPUS STYLE 97

THE BAGGIER THE BETTER UA STYLE ollege students were known for their in- tenseness toward fashion, striving for the ultimate diversified tastes in clothes. Preppyness, always the reigning die-hard on campus, competed with the most out- rageous outfits of new wave, both sport- ing along with the increasingly popular athletic look of warm-ups and sweats. Walking down the mall on any given day one could have seen it all concerning college fashion: the ever-present Greek letters distinct on every type of sweat available, the old stand-bys K-Swiss, 501 ' s, and penny loafers and the latest rages of the year Look-I ' m-so-unusual-Cindy- Lauper-style, unisex wear (most notably Ton Sur Ton) and anything by Benetton. Replacing last year ' s fashion atrocity of the Jennifer Beals just raped look, was the eye-sore flores- cence, hand in hand with Look! I ' m Madonna! Fashion, as was expected, abound on campus, but the over- whelming majority of students widely dressed for com- fort. Due to Tucson ' s warm climate, shorts, from the Bermu- da walking type to the off-the-wall California surf style, were a must have item, and so were cotton Mexican embroi- dered dresses. As for the short winter season, once again comfort dictated what students wore, such as warm-ups (not spared accompaniment by unlaced high tops) or pullovers with woolen pants or skirts. Naturally, what college would be complete without its backbone: The Preppies. Since from season to season, year to year their look seldom changed, the only noticeable and most recent contribution by this mass student Preppydom to college trends, were Swatches. Their favoritism could have been concluded by their inexpensiveness, sleekness and versatility. They made telling the time fun! A more wide-spread fashion attitude resulted from Wild- cats thriving in fun in the sun, a portion of them adapting to the Southwestern way of dressing. Stemming from the casu- al atmosphere of UA and the unisex cut, often, the baggier the outfit, the more desirable it was. Other notable mentions were cropped pants transferring over from earlier seasons, and belts, lots of them and droopy, wide ones. Surprisingly, hair styles became much more complex in large, because of new wave music securing a foothold in America, along with bobs and other traditional hairstyles somewhat decreasing. As for where to shop, Fourth Avenue became a regular stop, for the thrift stores much wanted one-of-a-kind and over- whelming original items. Not to mention the fact the minimal cost involved shopping there. College favored spots remained the same (Franklin ' s, Pierini ' s, department stores, Judy ' s, etc.) except Benettons, whic h opened this year, as an oasis in an otherwise sea of banality that is known as shopping in Tucson. Finally, forgetting all else, UA still saved face in the fashion world, creating the impression When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping. 96 FEATURES MINI-SKIRTS ENJOYED a re-emer- gence on the fashion scene. Most students agreed that they were per- fect for Tucson weather.

LET ' S GO TO THE MOVIES It was the first time I had gotten up enough nerve to ask the girl who sat next to me in math out on a da te, so I certainly didn ' t want to blow it. I planned to take her to a sure-fire, laugh-a-minute summer movie like Ghostbusters. That way I wouldn ' t have to worry about having to deal with nonstop conversation for two hours. Of course, if she didn ' t like the movie I ' d be sunk. Hmm . . . maybe instead I should take her to one of those artsy foreign films, to show her how deep I was. Maybe Another Country? No, then she might think I was too off-the-wall and not want to go out with me at all. What else was there? I guess I could take her to one of the films shown in the Classic Film Series. Yeah! Everybody loves movies like Casablanca and Bringing Up Baby. No, then she might think I couldn ' t handle the 80 ' s and lived in the past. Then she wouldn ' t go out with me either. Well, there was always the Gallagher. They showed a whole lot of good movies of all sorts of types. Now there ' s an idea! Oh, but what if she didn ' t like the picture they were showing that day? What would I do then? How about an action ad- venture film, like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? There we go! Lots of action and plenty of popular appeal. But then if I took her to a movie like that, it ' d be hard to get romantic during a lot of gunfire. Maybe I should let her pick the movie. Nah, then what if she picked some dumb movie I didn ' t like? Besides, if I did that, she ' d think I was wishy- washy and not go out with me because I couldn ' t decide anything. Why was going out on a simple date such a hassle? I guess because Hollywood was having another big boom year and produced so much good stuff, though it didn ' t seem like it to me. Maybe she ' d get sick and have to stay in. MISS PIGGY AND Kermit were at it again in The Muppets Take Man- hattan, released in the summer. GHOSTBUSTERS, THE OVER- WHELMING popular comedy hit of the season, had students singing Ghostbusters constantly.
