During the year, stu- dents have tried their hand at old tasks and have forged ahead wesusv CRAGG into new areas, ln many cases, we will be able to look back and President, Students' Union say that our efforts resulted in success. ln others, the results might not appear to be quite as favourable. Regardless of the outcome however, all who have participated in student activities will be able to point with enthusiasm to the fun and valuable experiences which have resulted. There is one product for which I am sure we will be remembered. Many hours of hard work have resulted in a concrete, tangible proposal for expanded Students' Union facilities. The final plans have been a long time coming. ln producing them Student Government on this campus, has shown itself to be progressive and able to take on very large tasks. ln the process, we have proven ourselves to be leaders in the area of student government both in Canada and the United States. The building l am sure, will stand as a monument to student initiative and strong independent student government. SUB Expansion has carried with it the necessity to reorganize our Students' Union. A strong, vital student program must be maintained as this campus grows and expands. Through reorganization we have provided a flexible structure within which progress can flourish generally and which will allow efficient and effective use of the new facilities. The degree of financial sophistication required by such a project is considerable. Consequently we have had to revise almost completely the constitutional structure of student fees. By doing so flexibility will be ensured. ln addition, the changes should allow us to derive the greatest possible value from each dollar. The result hopefully will be no fee increases even when the new building opens. History will record this as the year the West successfully challenged the Football machines of the East. The Golden Bowl aroused a degree of enthusiasm seldom before seen on the campus. Over 6,000 students will count this as one of the highlights of their University days. This year also saw the hosting of the National Congress of the Canadian Union of Students. Students will only forge their rightful place in Canadian society if they support this valuable national student or- ganization. Under the roof of the new Education Building, many new and exciting policies were hammer- ed out. For the first time in its history, the National Congress came to grips with the problems of Bicul- turalism. By grapling with this problem, in an intelligent and thoughtful way, students have blazed a new trail in Canadian unity. A vital and continuing problem in student life involves our relationship to the academic community. Over the years this side of student government has been neglected. We have not taken an interest in aca- demic affairs and as a result the students interests are very seldom heard. This year an academic affairs committee has been constituted. Its duties will include an assessment of academic standards in the areas of student and faculty attainment. Teaching standards will be investigated. It is of prime impor- tance for students to insist that teaching not take a back seat to research or professional commitments. The trend in this direction is obvious and alarming. Also in the area of academic affairs is the possibility of revision of the University Act. An intensive' study of the Collier Report, a document approved by the faculty association, has occurred. Student Government has achieved its enviable position through close cooperation with the administration. lf the University Act is to be revised students must ensure that the status they have achieved through many years of hard work is not lost. Students must be prepared to study closely all negotiations which are aimed at a revision of this Act. Many people have contributed to the success of this year. The clubs and organizations have pro- duced varied and stimulating programs. Student Council committees have also worked hard to com- plete many important tasks. ln particular however l would like to say a special thanks to Students' Council and the Executive Committee. We have had a strenuous year, the results are clear testimony to this fact. Elinor, Dave, and Doug have been extremely helpful. Thank you for your efforts. Thus the year draws to a close. The memories will be many. My best wishes to you all in the years ahead. V9 .4 L.,
