GYOW . .,,,. 5 alla oFFlcE of the PRESIDENT 5 S' EDMONTON' Q5 -1 6 Q 0 2 .. - ga, I Q AA I Alberta, Canada S , Umqgi. pr THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Ever since their inception in the middle ages, universities have attracted men who wished to learn from each other and from the records of the past, to transmit learning to the youth of the land, and to prepare themselves and others for service to mankind in the learned professions. The scope of learning has grown immeasureably since those earlier days, but the quest for knowledge and the desire to prepare for a life of service still remain. There have always been, and perhaps will always be, those who embark on programs of advanced study merely for the money and status they hope to gain. They too may have their reward, however ignoble their motives may have been, but those will alone gain true satisfaction from their efforts who place knowledge and wisdom first. The modern university is of necessity a complex and at times an impersonal kind of institution, but it is oui nope that each of the students here will find stimulation and challenge from his contacts with instructors and fellow students and will leave at graduation with a sincere desire to continue the quest for knowledge and understanding throughout life. Man has made giant strides in probing the secrets of the vast universe of which our earth is one of the smaller units in space. He has also sought and found the secrets of the physical and biological world in nuclei of the atom and of the living cell. Horizons of knowledge which once seemed limited and unattainable now seem to stretch into the infinite and the chal- lenge grows with each passing year. It is you who are students at the university today who will carry on in this great enquiry, whether in the scientific or academic world or in your own professional field. We wish you joy in your quest and in the satis- faction you gain in placing above all else the objective of service to your fellow man. JJMLWQQZJQ Walter H. Johns, President. I9
