A Philosophy of Nursing It was Sunday, and as I walked toward the hospital I thought how much I would like to be going to church, It was a beautiful day, and the glory of the great outdoors seemed tempting in contrast to taking up duties in the sick room. For a moment I felt sorry for myself. Why should I have to work on Sunday? Then, somehow, as I reached the hospital, noting as always that need and suffering take no holidays, and as I began to assume my duties as a nurse, the meaning of my work came into clearer focus. I became a- ware of nursing as not work at all, but opportunity - opportunity to turn my education and ability and interest into health and happiness for others. Possibly it was the wonderful smile and thank you I received from the crippled child as I helped her out of bed. Perhaps it was her trustingness . . . It may have been the warm handclasp from the patient with only one hand . . . Or the thought of the Bible verse, I was eyes to the blind, which I remembered as I fed a wo- man left sightless by her illness. Or all these things, together with so much more. I soon began to wonder just how many people have the privilege of finding so much challenge and interest in their work . I think not the painter, because he touches only the surface, while the nurse deals in the ma- gical colors of the human spiritg nor the sculptor, because he molds from lifeless clay, while the nurse works with life itself. Even the scholar and the fortunate churchgoer may catch but a glimpse of the eternal. But a nurse works with God. At the day's end, I found myself filled with a new sense of happiness, a happiness that drowned out fatigue I realized that this day I had caught a vision of something much larger than work . This dayI was beginning to learn what it can really mean to be a nurse. A Student Emory University School of Nursing Atlanta, Georgia TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY 'Tha Wulf: lu! Vufbooh Au Ylyloffmadf'
