1970, the embryonic year ofa decade, nourished
by the past yet eagerfor the future . . .
This is the year mankind pensively critiques its
immediate history and plans for the future. Lead-
ing the reviews is the new generation, the students
of today who have less to lose if their observations
are wrong and more to gain if they are right. For
each university 1970 has a different meaning.
For some it is a year of peace or at least of hope,
while for others it is a year dominated by campus
unrest, tension, and frustration. Yet at another
university it is a year of change and reform, of
academic relevance or intellectual freedom. At
Alabama, for the most part, 1970 is just another
year. But for a number of students at Alabama, and
the number is growing, 1970 may be the start of
something new. The mood is changing at the T
University of Alabama. There is a budding feeling
of concern that supersedes both blatant reaction
and silent apathy. It is a feeling that other schools
have experienced previously and if Alabama is

The mood on campus is changing and life at
Alabama is changing. It is impossible to decide
which came first if there is a casual relationship
involved, but unquestionably the change has been
an evolutionary process. When female fashions
became less conventional women students solicited
for more liberal dress regulations. The administra-
tion officially granted coeds the privilege of
wearing slacks to class and clothes became fun,
often times bizarre and eccentric. The new look,
probably a by-product of social discontent, was a
rebellion against tradition. Nevertheless, a person
was allowed to be different because it was stylish
and this attitude is spreading to an appreciation
of individuality for its own sake. The freedom to
be oneself without being subjected to social ridicule
is something new and refreshing for Alabama.
