 Student Life— 19

Page 22 text:

Students work after school hours Although the unemployment rate in the Quad-City area during 1982 and 1983 climbed to more than 17 percent and the unemployment rate for teenagers appeared even more dismal, many students at UT were able to find work in area fast food restaurants, retail stores, golf courses and other places of business. The primary reason for working amoung UT students was money. Many studentsfound the extra money useful for everyday spending. Others used the money they earned to help finance a college education. Crystal Cuerington, senior, commented, The primary reason I am working is so that I will have extra spending money. I am also saving some of my money for college, though. Some students said that another reason they are working is to gain experience. Beth Marshall, senior, works in an orthodontist's office as a part of Health Occupations. Beth said, Orthodontics interests me and I want to find out if I will enjoy working in dentistry. The experience might help me because I want to go into pre-dentistry. Most students felt that working does put a larger strain on academics. However, senior Tom Swinburn stated that, although working might hurt school work, Who really cares? DAVE A. PASLEY II 1.
