There is no 'offl- cer in the Class who does not' feel it and live it. It is the deep knowledge that before any of us can return to former, and perhaps more pleasant, paths, there is a great national and human task to be accomplished. Ours is the Navy's part of that task. For the performance of our individual parts of it, our Annapolis Naval Academy training is but the nrm founda- tion and preparation. It would be well for us all to bear in mind the following facts as set- forth b-y Richard Wllashburn Child in McClure's Magazine in an article based upon the re- cent investigation into the Wai' Department. We quote him, in part: "Are all the good things they are saying about the Navy true? Plenty of Americans are asking. The answer is an em- phatic yes. If it were all as good as the Navy, as clean, as sim- ple and as free from buncombe, boasts, and botches, then we would have a War machine indeedg Ten minutes with the Navy is enough to convince any observer that the Navy organizattion bears to the War Department organization the same relation that a Greek temple bears to a dish of scrambled eggs. The Navy says that it has enlisted for war more than 1,000,000 tons of additional shipping-about five times the number of ships of peace times, and this includes more than 800 auxili- ary craft, patrol vessels and the like. if The Navy is the basic hope of complete defense. Here is something worth printing in italicsg it is worth saying over and over aga.in. It is worth pasting in every American's hat. It is worth print- ing and hanging at the foot of each bed where each pair of eyes in the United States can see it in the morning. The Navy knows it. Armies are sefnsa-tiorial. .But it was africl is the British arid Americafn, N cwies which can anwl will save the world. Without an Americafn N ary no army of ours can strike afn offensive' blowg with a real Americaoi Navy rio foreign army cam, even strike' a blow at its. The N a-oy is the hey of our self-respect aoitl oar self-defense. So it will be imtil the sea is solicl. The Navy is our haunches. The control of the sea, as Nel- son knew, must always be the final element of victory in great wars. As far as self-defense goes, with a Navy strong enough to dominate other sea power, we could muster out the army, yawn and turn in every night knowing that the morning papers would contain no shocks. There is a satis- faction ready for the heart of any American who meets, face to face, the men and the organization of the Navy. it Congress said when it was through with the inquiry that Admiral Earle and his men in the Bureau of Naval Ordnance had done a job that was so good that it must not be told in public. The battles on land may have the headlines but our safeguard and the ultimate measure of our power of self-respect is in the Eleets, which, if big enough in the future, will win bloodless triumphs by 'bottling 'em in rather than battling 'em down! The Navy-praise be-has it!" And we junior line Officers of the Navy know that what Mr. Child says is true. That efficiency which he appreciates must be our war-religion. Each of us knows that in doing the Navy's great part of this war we are looked upon not to fail in any single detail-and we won't. And when that day is come, when, in the great readjustment of things, we who are to return to our former lives do return, let there be no one of us who cannot proudly look his f6llOW-COllHtl'j'1'l'lGll in the eye and say, "I did my utmost", and lay his uniform aside- ready to be donned again at an instant's notice-for the Navy! Being Afflicted with two rich uncles he was .Doomed for life as Clarence Edward. . After spending four years absorbing as much Engineering as his studies in the Larger Things of Life would permit, he was graduated with more or less Success. He beat it back to the Corn Belt, but not tothe Farml, and was in a fair way to become the Main Squeeze in the Yapps Crossing Light and Power Co. when the Kaiser changed the Course of Human Events. 4 Being an important Pe-rsonage in the Community, Eddie thought he would be Exempt, but when he saw the Handwrit- ing on the Wall, he suddenly became Patriotic. The examiner gently informed him that aside' from the Fact that he was Underweight and apparently had one Glass Eye and two Left Eeet, he was a perfect Specimen of Manhood. Our Hero rallied nobly under the Shock and in about a month was able to rise Cwith some Assistancej at 6 :20, take a Bath, Shave and Shine and get into formation at 6.40 with everything O. K. except the Flap on his left front shirt Pocket. In college Eddie had made f'Symbol Sigh" with as much Difficulty as taking Pennies from a Blind Man. He expected to ind the Picking pretty soft, but soon awakened to the fact that Life in the Black Gang is anything but one Grand Sweet Song. I One day in class the Instructor made some Trifling Remark concerning the operation of water tube Boilers. Now Eddie had only been operating B. 8 W1 boilers for the last live years, and the poor Simp thought he actually Knew something about themi. He rose to Renionstrate but all he got for his trouble was the Icy Stare and the Crushing Rejoinder that "THEY DON'T DO IT TI-IAT WAY IN THE NAV Y ." In spite of this Defeat, he was not Diseonraged and man- aged to get by without getting on the same Tree more than two months in Concussion. One thing Eddie confidently expected to Enjoy and that was Mess. At home he carried the Reputation of being the best Two Fisted Eater for miles around. After the 'first week, however, he Outraged his Condenser in town. with three plates of Ice Cream, a bottle of Ginger Ale, a couple of Orange Phos- phates and sundry Fancy Cakes and only went to Mess because the Bell rang. The guests ol' the evening were the ollicers attached to the station and the newly entered class ol' ll2lf'lll2lStl'l'S. Both Ad- iniral lflln-rlo and Vaptain Nulton were present and made ex- ceedingly interesting addresses. Westahy, .lst Vlass Master of Ceremonies, whose clever 111- lil'Ollllt'lTlOllS ol' the performers evoked howls ol' appreciation from the audience time and time again, opened the evening by requesting, or rather ordering, every one present to discard any l'rnit which he might llave stowed around his person, and then introduced three pairs of the liercest and most ferocious 'list lighters ever seen. Kid Willson, the lighting ex-yeonian, and knockout O't'onnell started off Well by beating each olher up most effectively. ",Knoekout,,' in the .lirst round requested the lighting yeoman to sit down gently, which he did, but the lighting spirit came right back in our hlr. 'flilateinupl' Rutlierford and Osborne were next. .Ruther- ford had a reach about half again as long as Osborn but that Lllllllili make any ditferem'e. Referee XVakeman, who originaiiyhwas to- be one of tl1e pugilists, but who unfortunatelyon the day, before got mixed up with some foul tips while catching on the base- hall team, and broke a few fingers, declared each and every bout a draw. A 4 ii 5' The Prickley Heat Quartette, consisting of Ensigns Wriglit. llunt, .Lincoln and Hill, then made its appearance. .Exquisite harmonies issued from the throats of all the members, ar their rendition of "Standing on the WValls of Zioir' Was a great success. , H ' """ D ' Next came a big hit of theevening, a sketch entitled HA Day At The Naval Academy." The audience was hysterical and several men had to be carried out, overcome by emotion. The battalion of some 30 men fell in for morning muster and inspection on the terrace and were duly mustered and inspect- ed while the audience was writhing around on-the floor and in their chairs trying their best to restrain their laughter long enough to hear what was being said. Orders from the Assist- ant for Braining were published, and last, but not least, there was THE duty officer. Ensign Blumenthal's impersonation of Ensign ,Duty Officer was a masterpiece. We hope he graduates with this class. His chances are prob- ably not as good as they were before the performance. To al- low the scenery to be changed Ensign "Red" Hunt stepped forward and sang "Caroline " He sang it once and then he had to sing it again, not because the next scene Was not ready, but because the audience liked his voice. The lower limb of Venus was also vividly described by the instructor. Out walked the navigation section and in tumbled the seanianship class to lind the blinker blinking away at even more than its usual rate. ldnsign C. A. Wray, wearing some things on his shoulders which resembled the epaulettes of a certain connnander and using a voice which even more distinct- ly resembled that of someone else's, propounded some exceed- ingly diliicult questions, the answers to which caused howl after howl to escape from the eager listeners and watchers on the other side of the footlights. So ended the day at Annapolis. Next on the program was Ensign "Bill" Dickson. I Every- body knew beforeha.nd that Dickson was gO'0f5l, and mfist of Us had traveled from all around to Barracks "A" at one time or another to hear him sing his songs. But 011 513315 Wentful night Dickson was better than ever beforef He out-Jolsollefl rerun Jolson. He Sang. Jolsonvs Songs in Et that pllf gloli- . e . r were son to shame and he was encored and encoi ed untll the 9 no more songs to sing. Dickson was well accompanied on the piano by Ensign Emmert. After a trio of engineers beat up a piano and a couple of mandolins a one-act play called "Doctor" was produced. In this play a somewhat efhminate youth appears before two rough-looking naval doctors for a physical examination for admission to naval, aviation. After being forced to read as vulgar a word as "pajamas" in order to have his eyes tested, and after being nearly pounded to death by the surgeons, our hero announced his intention to let iiying go and join the Pay Corps. Corbin was the patriotic youth, while Messrs. Clyde and Cree took the part of the doctors. Up stepped the Steam Fitters' Quartette and melo- diously sang a seagoing song about landing in "Any Old Port In A Storm." All the Reserve officers swelled up with pride to recognize such salty expressions as "ship ahoy," etc. A wonderful demonstration of mental telepathy by Omar Khayam and little "Nemo" Hunt, followed by Langstroth's Banjo Trio, finished up the magnificent performance. Every- body agreed it was the best show on earth. Great credit is due to Ensign E.- P. Schlichtmann, as gen- eral manager and hardest worker for the good cause. He was ably assisted by his junior officers, liangtroth and Wright, who were in charge of the programg Curtis, stage manager, and Barthel, Wheatley and Ingersoll. p ' E. S. UNDERI-IILL.
