27 John Edward Podolak, Jr. Bristol, Connecticut i General Engineering Naval Flight 0(ficer John came to 2 ' ?ih with an eye for trouble and beautiful women. His search carried him from U. of Delaware to Schaeffer ' s pub, where he became blood brothers with B.I. His love for flying allowed him to become squadron commander of VTNA, where he made sure the first priority was his own training. Although his immediate goal is NFO, he still hopes to fly for Iceland Air and own his own brewery. We still don ' t know how he avoided the BIG FRY after mess night 2nd class year. We ' ll always remember him for his ' Get all you can ' attitude and disarming smile. And we ' ll never forget — Clean floors, the ' sters, water-weenies, Colorado Sand- wich, 280 ' s, 10th in drill, and that incredible way with women (I mean, words) — ' Gentlemen . . . . ' Good luck in P-cola and the Blue Yonder. And remember, You may fire when ready, Gridley. BLAA.AAAH!!! Z, WES, Sonny Dean Albert Sacerdote Walpole. Massachusetts Political Science Surface Warfare Dean, aka the screen came to USNA from Massachusetts, dragging along his worldly innocence and atrocious accent. Out- wardly a model of virtue, deep inside there smoldered the heart of a weak-ma. He never had a real girlfriend, only a crush on one of his poli-sci profs and a certain commander ' s daughter. The intramural scene found him participating in batt sailing, fieldball, and slow- pitch Softball. He spent many a long weekend working hard to improve (save?) his car, the screen machine. A faithful and reliable friend, no favor was ever too great to ask. Best of luck, my friend. OMT Michael Bruce Schultz Greenbelt, Maryland Oceanography Supply Corps Schultzie is one of the few sports team captains I know who has taken the Navy seriously since I-day. .After being told to go home and grow up at baseball practice plebe year, Mike returned young- ster year to become a Navy record holder. He has been able to remain reasonably healthy with the help of a certain trainer who was more of a (roommate) than I was. His .440 batting average should help him down in Athens where he ' ll be swinging away at a new line of work. He has provided a cool head in many a heated discussion and in spite of the little hairs in the sink, I ' ve roomed with no finer an individual. It has truly been a privilege and a pleasure. Nickel. WHITEY Jed Charles Smith Tampa. Florida Political Science Naval Aviation Jedder entered midhood from the sandy beaches of Tampa, Florida. Through his homesick freshman year, many a time he found a certain Sandy beach to provide a reminder of the good ole daze. Carrying on the legacy of THE SHAFT, he spent soph- omore year under the instruction of Prof H. (Tapes, See ... A Night to Remember ). Through his ups and downs, Jed came to know the ins and outs of G-Town. Junior year, he became a member of the distinguished faculty of Chesapeake University of Naval Technology. He was, and probably still is, well publicized, finding his picture on most wanted posters at two local colleges. For the first three years, he led the soccer team in daily atta boys ; however, senior year found Coach M. nursing a three year head- ache and Jed on the links. Senior year, amidst a blizzard of changes, Jed doubled his QPR and conquered the Key School. FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS — THE SHAFT. SDM 623

Maximo Quibranza Mejia, Jr. Quezon City. Republic of the Philippines Political Science Foreign National Jun came to us via the Philippine Mihtary Academy. Plebe year was a JOKE compared to PMA. GOODY2SHOES never served a tour or restriction, although XIMO got pulled out of march-on for Army for tippmg his hat (5000). Max, a man of the world, explored Europe by train, climbed Mt. Fuji, and hopes to see the Great Wall with the Chinese mafia this summer. Proficient in six languages (working on JIVE, his seventh), he helped me pass English (1 helped him pass engineering) and even won first prize for a paper he wrote for NAFAC (English is only his third tongue). Only 5 ' 4», 1 14 lbs, Max is an All-American powerlifter. AKA Mr.ECA. he was pres. of the Chinese. Filipino, and combat pistol clubs. Although accepted by the Fletcher School, he ' ll have to first join the Pinoy Navy for eight years. I hope you find your dream Peenigh and a family like dad ' s. Good luck to the FCPP, Sige, ingat lang chong. L,P, H. RCS Scott David Morrissey Glenwood Springs. Colorado Physical Science Surface Warfare Mongo came the long way, Crabtown via Newport via the Amish hinterlands. Despite these treacherous beginnings, Mongo estab- lished himself on the mats, freshman year. Youngster year, Mongo enlisted in The SHAFT, under the tutelage of Prof H. (Tapes, SEE ... A Night To Remember). At Army, Mongo went into Au- dio Visual productions, punctuated by a close encounter with a Motley Crue look alike. In the spring, Mongo earned his degree through Potomac University of Seamanship, Sailing and Yachting; and worked in the public school systems of Sevema Park, Crofton, and Arnold. Mongo also roughed it up on the rugby pitch at Navy. Tragedy (?) struck junior year; Mongo metamorphosized into Scott, he chaired the Ring Dance, hit rugby parties, and settled per- manently in Frederick. Senior year, Scott played the links and chatted with the Marine Corps ' finest, and became optimistic about a career in the Navy. Fair winds and following seas. JCS Michael Joaquin Munoz Liverpool, New York System Engineering Surface Warfare Mike came to the Naval Academy in 1 984 the son of a retired naval officer. He decided plebe year to avoid the easy road and so chose system engineering as his major. This required him to ag- onize through the tough engineering courses of dynamics, cables, and fluids. Fluids also required Mike to ride the Rocket ; a task he accepted (not cheerfully) and successfully accomplished. Out- side the academic region, Mike excelled. He spent all four academy years in the Drum . Bugle Corps, where in his final year he became a soloist. D B provided him with excellent memories from New York I-V to Myrtle Beach (twice). My memories of Mike include many late night bull sessions talking about D B trips, company events and people, academy policies, and Trans Ams. I will never forget the numerous field ball games we played nor the wonderful defense he provided. Enjoy life and good luck!!! JEH Thomas Frederick Pietkiewicz Norwich, Vermont Economics U.S. Marine Corps Tommy P. (Peach) came to us from the state of Vermont and made frequent trips there and to Myrtle Beach. Sometimes we wondered if he wanted to go to Dartmouth. He had a big task following in the footsteps of the Pietkiewicz legacy, but no problem. Luckily, his parents moved to Annapolis firstie year, and this was a big plus for everyone, Tom is known for his diligent work in economics. As a result he was rewarded with a Burke Scholarship. Congratulations Tom! He kept trying to go NFO but just could not beat the AQT FAR; it beat him. No problem; Tom opted to wear green and we are sad to lose him to the Marines. Have fun running around in the woods, and thanks for the early morning PT, Semper Fi, Tom! KWJ 622

Robert Curtis Sparrock Queens, New York Oceanography Nuclear Power — Surface Having come from an oceanographic high school. Navy was a cinch for Jacques. In fact, he is among the highest n his major and got into the Scripps Inst, of Oceanography — his license to cold-chill in grad school in San Diego for the next two years. It ' s ironic that Swimrock ' s love for the ocean never helped his struggles in the pool. Never mind, he ' s excelled in other sports. He ran varsity track and led the brigade champion tennis team. An avid traveler the Rogue has seen the cities of Europe, the temples of Japan and the beaches of Puerto Rico and Indonesia. As a firstie, Lysander said bye to D B on Friday nights, hip-hopped onto his red ride, and went partying. But soon those days will be over. He has heeded the crackling whip, burned his black book, and vowed to settle down. To the future oceanographer of the Navy and his commander, the best of luck and all the happiness in the world. MQMJ Larry Wayne Strimple II Alvin, Texas Systems Engineering Naval Aviation Larry came to us from the lone star state with his loud per- sonality and good looks ready to take on the life of a Marine Aviator. Come Service Selection his love for flying led him to choose Navy pilot. The ultimate flirt, Larry is one of the few guys known who teases giris more than they tease him — just ask M.M. Sonny and his rifle arm led the heavies to 21 straight wins and a brigade championship. His excellent leadership would have earned him three stripes had he not failed conduct his 1 c year (thanks Dave) — but we had a lot of fun anyway! Some of the road trips are times we will never forget — Snowshoe, the Colorado Sandwich, Key West, etc. Larry was the ultimate friend who would go out of his way to do anything for others. We ' ve had some hard times and some great times, and our friendship will always be cherished. Godspeed to you throughout your life. It ' s been great. WES, PODS. Z Steven Charles Townsend Lancaster, South Carolina General Engineering Surface Warfare Steve, an easy-going guy — sometimes too easy-going — came to USNA from Greenwood, SC. Tempered in the fires of 1 1th Com- pany as a plebe. he became one of 27 ' s most ardent, though unnoticed supporters. Although of ungainly appearance, he proved his athletic abilities by participating in fencing, karate, fieldball, and fp Softball. His aspirations of becoming a naval architect were crushed when he recognized that higher math was not his forte. An exotic weapons enthusiast, he amassed such a collection over four years that he might as well have started a weapon of the week club. As a POV, he selected a ' 74 Chevy Impala — the tank, as he liked to call it. The most memorable thing about Steve was his conscious desire to be different from other people — mids in particular. The plumbing experience he gained during 1 c year is bound to serve him well in the fleet. OMT Owen MacPherson Travis Phoenix, Arizona History Nuclear Power — Submarines Owen was the consumate professional. His QPR, somewhere near 3.9, coupled with A ' s in conduct, performance, and on the PCR (for four years in a row) combined to place him in the top ten of our class. He spent 78 days on a submarine and enjoyed it. He did plebe detail . . . twice! As a firsty, he was a brigade training committee striper while simultaneously working on his masters at CUA. In spite of this, he was neither arrogant nor a pencil-necked geek. He played fieldball (proving not only his manhood, but also his insanity), fast-pitch, rowed crew as a 3 c, and even tried his hand at karate. O-Man (a.k.a. Otis, big O, etc.) never did anything halfway. His watch was a Rolex, his car a Porsche. When he went to G-town, it was in mess dress with not one, but three girls (this episode earned him the name gigol 0. ) The one time he got fried was for crashing over the OOW ' s table. Good luck, Bubblehead. SCT 624
