The staff of 2010 Midships is pleased to dedicate this yearbook to Captain John M. Nunnenkamp, USMS. This mainstay of the Marine Transportation Department has served at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy since 1977. CAPT Nunnenkamp received the prestigious Vice Admiral Gordon McLintock Award at commencement this year. He retired from federal service in August 2010. Born in Brooklyn but raised on Long Island, CAPT Nunnenkamp entered the USMMA as a plebe in 1970. He starred on the athletic field in baseball, football and X ¥ 3» Midshipman John Nunnenkamp Class of 1974 basketball and was awarded the 1974 Stedman Trophy as ■ . m outstanding scholar athlete of the year. [In 1991 he was inducted into the USMMA Athletic Hall of Fame.] Midshipman John Ni For three years after graduating from Kings Point, Class of 19 CAPT Nunnenkamp sailed on dredges for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, I j raising his license. In 1977, he accepted a position at his alma mater in the Commandant’s Office as Fourth Company Officer. However, with his eye on a faculty position, he applied for an opening in the Marine Transportation L I Department in 1979 and was appointed an instructor. In the ensuing years, CAPT Nunnenkamp earned a Master’s degree in Transportation Management, upgraded his merchant mariner’s license to chief h mate, and drilled as a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, eventually attaining the rank of Captain, USNR. In the Bowditch Hall classrooms and navigation labs, CAPT Nunnenkamp XT | instructed and inspired class after class of midshipmen. His dedication as a faculty member earned him the 2001 “Teacher of the Year” designation from the — i graduating class. Outside the classroom, CAPT Nunnenkamp was instrumental in J I helping install state-of-the-art navigation equipment into the Bowditch laboratories. CAPT Nunnenkamp and his wife, Patricia, have two daughters and a son. To the Class of 2010, CAPT Nunnenkamp says: “My last big thrill on retiring is to ANf ITED :HAI 3INE DEfVn ft 4 % have the Class of 2010 dedicate their yearbook to me. It just doesn’t get any better than this! My parting words of advice to you is to remember that the only time that Success comes before Work is in the dictionary. Continue to strive and work hard!
