THE SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20590 June 16,2008 Congratulations on your graduation! Today you are at last mariners, and you now join the ranks of thousands of Merchant Marine officers and seafarers who have so ably served America in times of peace and in times of war. Given the challenges our Nation faces today, it is reassuring for America's future to know that the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, continues to train and educate men and women of the highest caliber who live both their lives and professions in accordance with the Academy's call-to-action motto: Acta Non Verba — deeds not words. You have answered the call, and it is your deeds here at Kings Point that we recognize today. The excellent training and the lessons in teamwork you learned here will help you weather any storm and navigate any sea changes that may lie ahead. You can also be confident that your hard-earned engineering and navigational skills will long be in demand by a free Nation that is constantly in motion and always in a hurry to move goods, services, and people from here to there. You have learned well the principles of duty, excellence, and sacrifice through arduous studies, a rigorous year at sea, and from the invaluable knowledge passed along to you from the Academy's talented and experienced faculty. I have no doubt that you will all make remarkable contributions to your county and its maritime transportation system. As your service secretary, I am very proud of each and every one of you, and on behalf of the American people, I salute you and your outstanding accomplishment. Again, congratulations! Fair Winds, Following Seas and God’s Speed! Sincerely yours. 19 Mary E. Peters
