US Department of Transportation U S Merchant Manne Academy Kings Point. New York 1 1024-1699 Maritime Administration Bowditch Hall June 21, 1999 The Class of 1999 United States Merchant Marine Academy- Kings Point, New York 11024 Ladies and Gentlemen of The Class of 1999: It is a signal honor and a most sincere pleasure to be given this opportunity to address you who today become full- fledged alumni of Kings Point and join the thousands of us who have preceded you out Vickery Gate; Welcome aboard! You now embark on a glorious voyage - the rest of your life - for which we here at KP have endeavored to prepare you well. I know I speak for all the faculty and staff when I extend very best wishes to you all for your future success! Most especially, however, I wish to extend my sincerest personal compliments for your individual achievements while here at the academy as well as my heartfelt thanks for the two honors you have so graciously seen fit to bestow upon me. Having this volume dedicated on my behalf and to have been voted the Sue Alice McNulty Award for Outstanding Teaching are overwhelming tributes for which I am sincerely grateful! Please know that I deeply appreciate your recognition of my teaching efforts because good teaching is (dare I risk a pun) hard work. However, good learning is even harder, and you have worked very, very hard, especially this past unique year. Your impressive license results - the best in years - alone are proof of the earnestness of your efforts. You can, and should, be very proud of your success... and I salute you! It was a pleasure working with, and getting to know, so many of you individually (alas, engineers usually avoided me; deckies probably would have too had it been practicable!) , and I look forward to seeing you again from time to time at your various reunions and return visits. Until then keep in touch, and I extend my very best wishes for good health, happiness, and professional success. SBE; FULL AHEAD! Douglas A. Hard, KP '62 CAPT, USMS USNR Master Mariner Professor of Navigation Law
