SUPERINTENDENT UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY KINGS POINT, LONG ISLAND, N . Y. 11024 June 18, 1984 To the Class of 1984: The American Merchant Marine will need your talents, abilities and dedication in the years ahead if our country is to fulfill its destiny as a great trading nation and world power. My observation of the Class of 1984 leads me to the firm belief that you will make the highest quality of con- tribution and further will bring distinction to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. I am positive that through- out your careers you will repay many fold, the investment the public has made in your education. The unacceptably low state of our merchant marine will make difficult your career beginning. Be resourceful and determined. You will succeed! You and I have both been here at USMMA for these last four years. In July of 1980 you walked through Vickery Gate for the first time as a member of the Regiment and I, sym- bolically, did so for the second time but now as Superintend- ent. I am proud to have had this identification with the Class of 1984. I shall watch with particular interest as your careers progress as I will have a special sense of sharing in the joy of your success. With the very best of good wishes for the Class of 1984,

Commodore Thomas Patterson, USMS Deputy Superintendent June 18, 1984 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 1984 Congratulations to the Class of 1984 on your graduation. You now join the ranks of a distinguished alumni renowned for their service at sea and ashore. Challenge and adversity are no strangers to Kings Pointers. The Academy was born in the strife of war. You, too, are facing a challenge, a declining number of sea going jobs and the challenge to restore the competitiveness of U.S. Flag shipping. The U.S. Merchant Marine has always been acknowledged as the world leader. You must now go forth to provide the leadership for which you have been trained and educated. To those going on active duty in the Armed Forces, you will find your service rewarding and more than a job, a way of life. Your gualifications as professional mariners will enable you to serve your country with distinction and honor. May you all continue to uphold the tradition of excellence of the Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine. I am proud to have served with each of you. Fair winds and following seas. T. J. PATTERSON, JR. Com modore USMS Deputy Superintendent
