REAR ADMIRAL ARTHUR B. ENGEL SUPERINTENDENT Rear Admiral Arthur Bright Engel, United States Coast Guard, (Retired), Superintendent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, is a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan Graduating from the U S. Coast Guard Academy in 1938. he first served on the cutters Chelan and Cayuga until the outbreak of the Second World War, during which time he was assigned as the deck watch officer on board the cutter Duane on North Atlantic convoy escort duty. After receiving a Master’s degree in Naval Construction and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he served as engineering officer of the cutter Pontchartrain, homeported in Boston, Mass.. 1 945-1 947; executive officer of the icebreaker , Mackinaw on the Great Lakes, 1951-1961. Between cutter assignments, Admiral Engel had tours of duty at Coast Guard Headquarters in the Naval Engineering Division and at the Coast Guard Yard as Design Superintendent. From 1961-1965 he served as the head of the Department of Applied Science and Engineering. Ad- miral Engel was then named to command the Coast Guard Shipyard at Curtis Bay. Md. While there, he earned the Coast Guard Commendation Medal for outstanding performance of duty. In June of 1967 he was promoted to Rear Admiral rank and appointed Superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy. On July 1, 1970 Admiral Engel assumed com- mand at Kings Point. He is the only man ever to serve as Superintendent of two federal academies. 25
