“In the years to come many a Captain and Chief Engineer will open these pages and look back upon his life as a Cadet-Midshipman. One can easily vis- ualize the memories that will ensue. The reviews, the drills, the classes and the highlights of his youth will be lived again.” “We, the staff, feel that it has been a privilege to have been instrumental in producing the first yearbook of the Academy. May there be bigger and better MIDSHIPS in the years to come.” Hill E. D. Swanberg Editor-In-Chief, 1944 for the staff It has been twenty-five years since the words of Editor Swanberg were written. During those years much water has passed under the keel as the saying goes. Thousands have come and gone since then, each to seek his fortune in the world. Times and methods have changed, but one small thread re- mains . . . the spirit of 1944 to produce bigger and better annuals. The staff of the 1969 MIDSHIPS has strived to do this, sometimes wondering if it was worth it. You now have the product of our labor before you and we hope it is “bigger and better” than those before it. Now twenty-five years old, MIDSHIPS is ready to go forth into the next twenty-five, keeping in mind the phrase, “May there be bigger and better MIDSHIPS in the years to come.” 1969 MIDSHIPS STAFF

'dedicated to a greater Kings Point Kings Point has been in existence for twenty-five years. The pages of this book show the evaluation of the Academy during those years. Within them, an enormous amount of history has been recorded . . . a great war ended, and a nuclear age began. This new age has seen space and oceanographic exploration, the development and widespread application of computers, and a host of other technological advances. The transportation industry has not stood still. Within ten years the jet airplane has virtually replaced its propeller-driven fore-runner. The maritime industry has seen the development of the super-tanker, larger and faster break-bulk vessels, containerization, and the first commercial ship propelled by nuclear power. The technological advances of the past twenty-five years have been great . . . the possibilities for the future seem limitless. Behind all these changes are the vast improvements and applications of technology. The very source of technology is education. Here lies Kings Point’s role. It is not enough, however, for Kings Point to “keep pace with the times,” it must set the pace.
