Secretary of ilic Treasure TREASURY DEPARTMENT Since its establishment in 1790. the United States Coast Guard has performed its peace time duties under the Secretaries of the Treasury from Alexander Hamil- ton to Henry Morganthau. The history of the service demonstrates the practicahility of our serving under the Treasury Department in times of peace, thereby providing a flexibility that allows ns to perform duties for all other departments of the Federal Government. However, the military status of the Coast Guard has provided a trained and efficient military unit ready to function as a part of the v\ of our country in time of war.
