Longhorns in tie By JOHNNY CAMPOS Times Sports Writer HEBBRONVILLE fSpll- United and Hebbronville were so identical going into the season's ending contest here Friday night they decid- ed to play to a 14-14 draw and finish with 4-5-1 records. The hometown Longhorns had the better offensive stats with 328 total yards to 255 for United but a couple of un- usually long field goal attempts late in the game gave the Fans something to cheer about. Both teams were plagued with fumbles throughout the game.l'nited losing all five of its and Hebbronville losing five of seven as the backs had trouble holding on to the cold pigskin. George Ramirez got things going for United with only 12 seconds left in the first quarter, plunging in A from four yards out to end a steady 66-yard march by the Horns. QuarterbackCarlos Garcia hitCarlosVara with a 30-yard pass at the 10 to setup the score. Ed Sherfey boomed the point beyond the scoreboard for a 7-0 UHS lead. Hebbronville responded in the second period with a 60- yard drive of its own. Ramiro Valderas broke loose for a 32- yard run to the United 22 setting up a nine-yard run by 204-pound Fred Holguin, who was Hebbron's leading ground gainer punishing the Longhorn defense 17 times for 104 yards. Rafael Quiroz broke through to block Valderas' extra point attempt to keep United up by one. United scored again in the third quarter when Luis Gon- zalez, the workhorse in the contest with 137 yards on 27 carries, broke on a quick handoff for a 37-yard TD scoot. Sherfey converted for a 14-6 cushion with 6: 54 left in the period. Hebbronville then drove 69 yards covering 57 of them on passes from Jorge Salazar to Gilbert Soliz. Salazar found Soliz with a 33-yard scoring pass at 4: 30 of the third canto to pull the 'Horns within two. On the try for two, Holguin appeared stopped at the line, but a second effort took him in for the equalizer. Soliz caught seven passes from Salazar for 117 yards- all in the second half. The fourth quarter only produced a 54-yard field goal attempt by Sherfey with 32 seconds left and a 42-yard try by Valderas with no time showing. Both were con- siderably short.
