I 'D . , c- ,i:.R. .'pb1h' HISTORY CF CLASS CF 53 On September 6 1950 we half heartedly left Ben Franklm and Lafayette and turned our faces toward what were to be the most excltmg three years of our l1ves L1tt1e d1d we know then how much we would cherlsh thls old Un1ontown H1gh School There were many heartaches over leav1ng our Jumor h1ghs but after a few weeks at U H S all our sorrows were forgotten and we were on the threshold of a new hor1zon Two days later the Ra1ders defeated thelr flrst foe of the season and of course all of us loyal sophomores turned out to wltness our f1rst football game at U H S But there were other act1v1t1es besldes football On November 16 17 we proudly presented our one act play For the Love of M1ke w1th M1ss Mary Walsh as d1rector The chorus under the d1rect1on of Eugene Hulbert and the pantormme cast under the superv1s1on of Mxss Chr1st1ne Lucas presented the Nat1v1ty Story on December 24 Durmg Chrlstmas season the band sold Chrlstmas trees to help buy the new unxforms February proved to be a busy month for us the m1nstrel sophomore party and the exc1t1ng basketball game at P1ttsburgh where Duquesne wh1pped us All County Band took place 1n Aprll at the Veterans of Fore1gn Wars Hall 1n Union town Our band sported thelr new unlforms for the f1rst tlme 1n the May Day Parade of that year We closed ou1 sophomore year wlth the chorus concert The next rung of the ladder was our Jumor year One of the f1rst dut1es as Junlors was to elect offlcers We chose B111 W3tklUS pres1dent Nelson Detweller v1ce pres1dent Barbara Woodward secretary Sara Ferguson treasurer and Ed Vlncent sergeant at arms They worked wlth M1ss Chr1st1ne Lucas our sponsor The h1ghl1ght of the sport s year was the fxrst undefeated Ra1der football team 1n the h1story of our school Coach1ng our superb team were Head Coach W1ll1am Power and asslstant coaches John Kruper and Max Zane Our class was well represented ln the three one act plays by 1tS presentatlon of Double Date After the chorus gave the Chrlstmas concert lt worked on 1ts repertolre for the concert presented at Indlana State Teachers College MISS Chr1st1ne Lucas the d1rector of Junlor dramatlcs selected Our Hearts Were Young and Gay as our class play of 52 Aprll and May were our last months as underclassmen and we engaged 1n our flnal act1v1t1es band concert Junlor dance and chorus concert Almost evexy one attended the Blossom Ball our Junlor dance whlch was a great success at the Country Club Graduat1on day came for the sen1ors and we prepared to follow ln thelr footsteps On September 3 our last year of hxgh school began Everyone was ambltlous to make our f1nal year the best year somethmg to remember Durlng the cam palgn for class offlcers the students showed much enthuslasm and the1r heers echoed through the halls The results showed the class offlcers were Nelson Detweller pres1dent Myrna Rofey vlce pres1dent Pat Watson scretary Bob McBurney treasurer and B1ll Merryman sergeant at arms The club that dom1 nated our IIVGS all year was MISS M1ll1cent Ne1ll s Theatel Appreclatlon Club as It planned and prepared for 1tS tr1p to New York 1n Aprxl Our class offlcers along Wlth Guy R1der our class sponsor proved to be most worthy of thelr pos1t1ons by organlzlng a successful semor dance Turkey Tw1rl on November 21 at the Country Club Ph1l1p H1ll dlrected the semor one act play The Toy Heart whlch was glven on December 11 12 w1th the other three one act plays The chorus presented 1ts annual Chrlstmas concert under the d1rect1on of Eugene Hulbert and the staglng under the d1rect1on of Robert Lyon Jr Other 3Ct1V1t1eS of our semor year conslsted of m1nstrel semor play ent1tled Seventeenth Summer chorus and band concerts and the commencement dance Baccalaureate and graduatlon servlces were held ln the h1gh school stad1um Our hlgh school days were over and as we slowly departed we paused a moment on the steps to catch a f1nal ghmpse of the halls of good old U H S and turn to face a new 11fe leavmg our footpr1nts behlnd us L46 a v ' - v v a . . . .
