Primary interest was in the Spanish language, literature, economics, geography and social background of Spain and the Latin-American countries. Familiar to members was this concluding expression, "Adios amigosf' I O Le Cercle Francais To afford increased opportunity for acquiring knowledge of France and her language was the purpose of Le Cercle Francais. Language O Der Deutsche Verein This club offered its members a background in the German language which they could not attain in regular classroom study. The students sang German folk songs, dramatized short sketches and gave reports relating to current happenings and events pertaining to Germany. Their business was to see that traffic moved the right way in the right places at the right times. Especially helpful were these students to sopho- mores who were unfamiliar with the building. Some pupils actually believed there were elevators in U.H.S., but the inside patrol directed activities well with their adviser, Guy Ross. Clubs O Advertising Club Practical phases of retailing were included in the following activities of this club: local retail store window displays, newspaper advertising layouts, studied and prepared in school, sales talks and demonstrations. There were guest speakers and stimulating motion pictures. Mingled with their work were two social events, the skating party and the picnic. The success of the Advertising Club was due to L. C. Dodson, adviser. I O Chess Club Chess is an ancient game in which castles, bishops and knights charge and re- treat across the playing field. ever assisting the soldier pawns and the queen in de- fending the king. Only a chess player understands the danger involved when his opponent calls 'icheckf' That is the time that the king must move out of danger or a piece be placed in his defense. Thirty members of the Chess Club, instructed by Guy E. Rider. met each Monday to determine the champion of the year. I Photography Club Strictly amateur. the Photo Club made no pretense of competing with profes- sionals. Members thrived on the sheer joy of talking. making and showing pictures. Their illustrated lectures and demonstrations acquainted them with the simpler techniques of photography. Active members had access to the schoolls rninuseule dark room for developing and enlarging pictures. O Fire Fighters To be a member of this group, one had to have a physical examination. The boys of the forest fire crew rendered the community and state a valuable service. Through their efforts, they saved many acres of timber from destruction. The or- ganization was capably sponsored by John Kruper, assisted by expert personnel of the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters. The latter generously pro- vided the necessary equipment shown in the picture. IZ Lu-5 I Girls' Bowling Club These girls eagerly look forward to Tuesday afternoon, 4:15 o'clock, when they hurry down street to Mier's Bowling Center for an hour of recreational activity, bowling. The club, sponsored by Miss Florence King, has a tournament each spring in which any girl may enter. To the best players are a trophy for the winning team and two .individual plaques. What fun and social jollity exist for this Girls' Bowl- ing Club. 0 Senior Girl Scouts Troop 5, the only Senior Scout troop in Uniontown, was composed of twenty- five girls. Their program consisted of giving service to individuals and community organizations. Not only did they work for others but also they enjoyed the taffy- pulls, scavenger hunts and parties. However, it required the greatest efforts on the part of coaches and players. At that. the team did not live up to pre-season expecta- tions of the coaches or the fans. Many times a slight twist of fate would have turned defeat into victory. YVhen the coaches, Clarence Stark, John Kruper and Albert Everhart, returned from Camp Sokol, they knew there were long, hard days ahead. Only once were the Red Raiders soundly thrashed, at the hands of German Township, but didn't they also defeat the best in the Monongahela Valley? Only once were the Raiders held scoreless. ..63..
