FOOTBALL
We ran, we tackled, we blocked, we kicked, we passed, we were knock-
ed down and we got up to be knocked down again. What crazy men were
willing to take such a physical beating and come back for more? We were,
the football squad, and we are proud of ourselves and our record of six
wins against two losses. We put forth every last bit of effort in every game
which plus the knowledge we acquired from our able coaches was the lead-
ing factor in our success. We appreciated the unswaying loyality of our
supporters and the part they played in making our experiences on the grid-
iron the pleasant memories they are.

"Look at that boy in maroon and white move out ahead ot the pack!"
That was one ot the usual remarks we heard at all track meets U. H. S. was
entered in. This track team of '42 wasn't the type you could call well-bal-
anced and let it go at that because as sure as you did someone might think
that it was minus individual stars. Then again you couldn't say they were
a team of stars-right away they'd counter with the remark that the team
wasn't well-balanced, Probably the best way to describe them is just to say
"They were greatl" The showing our good old U. H. S. made in all meets
this year was every bit a showing worthy ot an Everhart team which is really
saying something. Yes sir, we'll all long remember the many enjoyable atter-
noons aftorded us by this squad.

TENNIS
Our tennis season started out with a bang! First there was that tor-
rid tournament and all those decisive playoffs, After weeks of struggling,
Peggy Thompson emerged as the girls' champion and Ivan Frankhouser was
tops among the boys. We downed South Union in both attempts and went
on to a promising Spring season. The members of the tennis team were: Ann
White, captain, Peggy Thompson, Martha Jane Greaves, Betty Lee Truman,
Doris Flannigan, Doris Dietz: Tom Snell, captain, Ivan Frankhouser, Bill
Howard, Dave Davies, Dave Snyder, Ed Snyder.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Membership in this is compared to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary fra-
ternity in college. The faculty somehow chose us forty-tive as representatives
of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The officers are: Bob
Varndell, president, Sam Frock, vice president, Doris Jean Ryan, secretary,
Betty Rogers, treasurer, and Reid Grove, guardian.

signment for us . . . sure we have had a grand time. The errors-charge

it has been fun, and we hope that our work will be worth keeping. So longl

Tommy Snell, Jean Konnerth, lvan Frankhouser, Ann White, Mary Lib
Brownfield and Harry Hutchinson.
SENIOR HIGH NEWS STAFF
We could hardly wait until Thursday afternoon when we could grab
the Senior High News and catch up on the newest news, oldest jokes, and
best gossip . , . the editorials were really "some stuff" too. Hats off to our
editors, Peggy Clark, Harry Hutchinson and Sam Frock, our reporters, and
the Business Staff, who managed to get twenty-six issues off the press.
Page 53.
MAROON KEY CLUB
lt was a real job but we managed it. Seating people at football and
basketball games may not look like much ot a task but just try it with a
crowd like the one at the Connellsville basketball game! We'll have to admit
that we sometimes had a pretty good time doing it, though, and in the end
when we received those coveted letters everything was just swell.
THEATER APPRECIATION
Tires being as scarce as they are, we're even lucky to have gotten to
travel to Pittsburgh to see so many varied plays and noted personages under
the chaperonoge ot Miss Millicent Neill, Imagine the thrill of seeing Helen
Hayes, Talullah Bankhead, Vera Zorina, Dorothy Gish, Annabella, Ethel
Barrymore, Victor Moore and Maurice Evans on the stage! The officers
were Ann White, president, Jean Konnerth, vice president, Polly Carter,
secretary, Doris Dietz, treasurer.
Page 54.
BOXING CLUB
A rugged bunch of individuals, we boxers. A left jab to the nose, a
right cross to the heart and now on upper cut to the jaw. "Box, don't slug l"
prompted A. J. Everhart. Without doubt this sport requires quite a bit of
skill.
RIFLE CLUB
Ready! Aiml Firel We tried hard to hit those tiny black bullseyes but
we just couldn't avoid missing once in a while. "Practice makes perfect,"
was our motto and although we never reached the point of per-
fection the able instruction of our sponsor, Mr. Stark, improved our shoot-
ing greatly.

the much awaited Mother and Daughter's Banquet . . . Assisting Miss
Mary Jefferis were the officers, Beverly Smart, president, Doris Dietz, vice
president, Bettie Jennings, secretary, and Mary Lib Brownfild, treasurer.
BETA l-ll-Y
Under the leadership of Clarence Stark, this organization had a full
and happy year of activities, Weekly meetings were of great interest, and
the influence ofthe group on each individual is bound to be for the best.
The officers were Robert Varndell, president, Charles Gans, vice
president, Paul John, secretary, Bill Maize, treasurer, and Fred Lloyd,
chaplain.

FORENSICS
The competition was really keenl But we glided along from County,
to District, to State gaining valuable experience at each succeeding event.
Thanks to the encouraging help of Mr. Patterson in music, Miss Brooke,
declamation, Miss Zearly, extemporaneous speaking, Mr. l-lill, discussion,
Miss Pritts, poetry, Miss Seeman, Shakespeare and original oration, ana
Mr. Ronco, debating, we came through with flying colors.
DEBATING
"Resolved that every able-bodied male citizen have one year of full
time military training before attaining the present draft age." This was
our resolution. Although we didn't win every decision, we gained valuable
experience from all the teams we met. We had loads of fun too, what
with trips to Pittsburgh, St. Vincents, and that never-to-be-forgotten
weekend at Penn State.
Page 59.
ALPHA TRI l-ll-Y
We tried sincerely "to create, maintain and extend high standards
of Christian character" not just during our meetings under Miss l-lamilton's
watchful eye, but day in, day out. Above everything else we'll remember the
girls whom we wouldn't have known so well otherwise. Our officers were Joan
Chorpenning, president, Ann White, vice president, Charlene Rishel, secre-
tary, Sara Louis Mclntyre, treasurer, and Ruth Garret, chaplain.
ALPHA I-ll-Y
To create, maintain, and extend throughout the l-ligh School and
community high standards at Christian character was the motive of each ot
the l-li-Y organizations, Alpha included. The boys had a busy and profitable
year, and the stamp of the l-li-Y is on them tor lite,

OUTSIDE PATROL
We were the ones who protected the little darlings from those viCiOuS
onrushing omnibuses which whiz up and ,down Fayette Street. Braving the
snow, wind and rain to provide sate passage for the I4OO students was a
distinct duty of our group. Though our job was not always pleasant, we
found happiness in rendering this service to the school and point with pride
to our perfect record of no casualties among U. I-I. S. students.
INSIDE PATROL
"I never saw a test like itl The questions were so . . . slippery and
hard, and there were so many kids skating A . . on my new book, so now he's
going to make a report on it." And so on between all the periods, we're just
good material for a pushebutton program.

Although we gathered together every wednesday and sang i
te songs, individually we still sing better in the bathtub. Our sponsor, Miss
l-lammitt, patiently listened to our wailings as we prepared our songs for
assembly. The memories of singing for the baccalaureate services were our
most cherished of the complete year.
MIXED CHORUS
We practiced under Miss l-lammitt's guidance until our four part
harmony was in harmony, but it wasn't all work, we had some really hilari-
ous moments, The excitement of our singing at the Calvary Methodist
Church, in assembly, and at the Baccalaureate Service will be uppermost
in our reminscing.

DER DEUTCI-IES VEREIN
We can certainly boast of Senior High's broadmindedness since we
still have a German Club. And why should we be narrow minded when we
think of all those schoner Lieder und klug Geschichte that we learned in
Der Deutches Verein? Their officers were: William Junk and Esther Doro-
tinsky, presidents, Bill Hibler and Lisa Polman, vice presidents, Jean Craig
and Mary Mullan, secretaries, Bud l-lunt and Doris Dietz, treasurers, Doris
Dietz, reporter, Clark Coldren, usher.
l.E CERCLE FRANCAIS
Parlez-vos francais? lf you don't and belong to the French Club, it
certainly isn't Miss Mattie Wright's fault. Every meeting was chuck full of
entertainment. Sometimes we sang French songs, other times we enjoyed
guest speakers and once in a long while we treated ourselves to a gay party.
Officers are: Charles Hathaway and l-lelen Roelkey, Presidents, Donald
Riggin and Judson Abraham, vice presidents, Paul Turosak and l-lelen
Roelkey, secretaries, Judson Abraham and Corinne Bree, treasurers, Edward
Wright and Charles Lewellyn, ushers.

to lead the basketball and football 'teams on to victory under Mr. Dunn's
guidance. Peppy, enthusiastic and capable describe the varsity leaders, Cor-
rine Bree, Martha Wolinslci, Jane King, Sylvia Donovan, Punk Werner, and
Howard Barasch.
CHORAL READING CLUB
"l-laven't you any rhythm?" Miss Neill battled with our sluggish
voices until we read our poetry in harmonious unison. "Do You Remember
An Inn, Miranda?" Remember? The officers were: Lea Rae Morrison, presi-
dent, Betty Gestrich, vice president, Janet Olson, secretary, and Lois Ann
Riggs, treasurer.
Page 65.
BIRD CLUB
At least some of us were able to drag ourselves out of bed in time to
see the sunrise, and we are none other than Mrs. Conn's Faithful birdvhik-
ers. We stopped dead in our tracks to listen to the sweet warblings of Chic-
kadee, Junkos, and Titmice, not to mention many others. The officers for
the first semester were: Bill Locke, president, Elizabeth Smith, vice presi-
dent, Sara Mosier, secretory, Marion King, treasurer, and Jean Beveridge,
usher.
NATURE CLUB
Under the capable direction of the sponsor of this organization, Mrs.
Anna A. Conn, we learned much about the general subject of nature. We
took walks, and observed flowers, and studied in class, sometimes, and we
visited museums, and we saw pictures, and we went to Pittsburgh, ond, and
. . . l Anyway, this was one of our best clubs, and we enjoyed it.

SOC I ETAS LATI NA
After all our years of struggling through Latin, we've finally come
to appreciate and enjoy this ancient language through the patient guidance
of Miss Brice. The officers were: Lois Ann Riggs and Warren Zacovic,
presidents, Marvin Benson and Gerry Ohrin, vice presidents, Peggy
Williams and Doris Miller, secretaries, Martha Cobert and Foe Adams,
treasurers, and Betty Jean Donges and Margaret Paterson, ushers.
LA SOCIEDAD l-HSPANAMERICANA
Our Spanish Club holds one of our gayest memories. There were
only a few of us, but the enjoyment we had singing and talking about the
exotic senoritas and dashing senors more than compensated our time. Miss
Locke, the sponsor, aided the officers: Yolande Massimiarii, president,
Jean Barton, vice president, Anna Mary Paulson, secretary, and Agnes
Rechtorik, treasurer.

substance, and hoping . . .
LITTLE THEATER GUILD
We, the Seniors of U. l-l. S., the dramatic "Dramats" of the school,
were quite busy this year, what with our successful performances of: "The
Dictator Visits l-lis Mother," our tense one-act tragedy, "Spring Dance,"
our gay threeeact comedy, and our monthly club plays. All our thanks to
Mr. Hill for his skillful direction of our efforts.

carried out the four sides of the Hi-Y square-clean speech, clean sports,
clean scholarship, and clean living. We'ye learned a lot in the past year
but then that's what you'd expect with a group of officers like this: Sam

Just think! We actually get to decorate Metzler's display window!

Miss Lucas had quite a trying time with us would-be Thespians,
but at least we sympathize with the struggling actors on Broadway. Our
contributions to the four, one-act plays, "Yes Means No," and our three-act
play, "Ever Since Eve," were such howling successes that we're more than
just proud of our grease-paint artists. The officers were: Edward Mosier,
president, Taylor l-less, vice president, l-larry Esbenshade, secretary, and
Seymour Berkman, treasurer.
SOPI-IOMORE DRAMATIC CLUB
Since our dramatic department corresponds with the reputation of
Senior High which is-but good, we must train our talent early. So here's
to Miss Walsh and her patience, and to the Sophomores' first success, "The
Good Sports." Officers: Charles Boyle and Patricia Coughanour, presidents,
Mariam Johnston, Edward Sandow, and Ann B. Clark, vice presidents, Pa-

Here is a scene from one of the dances held during our stay in
Senior High. We aren't sure of the time or the place, but it was either

are that we are having ci good time-as usual.
