" We, the Class of ' 67, wish to be remembered through all of those coming years. Yes, even for a hundred years! And especially do we wish to remember this, our last year, as students at Union Kempsville. We wish to remember this year as one brimmed full of fun and activities and all of the things that make the heart of a school pulsate with Life. C. Wilson Mr. W. B. Williams The main objective of the Art Department is to effect the integration of Art with the total school curriculum . We further aim to provide for the specific needs of students ' interests and aptitudes in order that they may reach their highest level of achievement . 30 Music Department Mrs. Ruby L. Allen Choir Music Mr. Roy A. Reid Band Music The Music Department of the Union Kemps ville High School provides oppor- tunity for enrichment in the areas of choral music and band. It also provides opportunity for community music edu- cation through its annual spring and winter concerts . Business Education Department Mrs. Jean O. Siler Business education is concerned with two major aspects of the edu- cation of youth . The B. E. Department at U. K. strives to provide knowledge, atti- tudes, and nonvocational skills needed by all persons to be effective in their personal economics and in their under- standing of our economic system . Secondly, the B. E. Department endeavors to make available vocational knowledge and skills needed for initial employment and for advancement in a business career . Mrs. Louise H. Reid 32 English Department The English staff at Union Kempsville is cognizant of the innovations being made in the English programs throughout the Nation . The teachers of English remain alerted to take advantage of the newest trends through advanced study, in-service programs, and state and national conferences. Liner The Guidance program is based upon an under- standing of the community; the needs of the pupils; the school ' s facilities and curriculum; and the abili- ties, interests, experiences and training of the faculty. 35 Foreign Languages Mrs. B. Greene The learning of a foreign language is assuredly difficult, but when mixed with dashes of fascinating customs and understanding of different ways of life, whether it be south of the border or across the sea, it is easily accomplished. 36 Industrial Arts Dept. Mr. A. H. Woodhouse Industrial Arts Industrial Arts is instructional shop work which provides all youth with sound educa- tional experiences that contribute to the satisfaction of their purposes, needs, and wants. Public secondary education must give every youngster the opportunity to learn to work with books and materials and to acquire reasonable judgment and some degree of techni- cal know-how. Greene Philosophy It is our contention that the mathematics courses taught at Union Kempsville High School provide a curriculum suitable for those students who will not go beyond high school, for those who will go on to college --the average, as well as the academically talented student. We believe that our primary function is to train as many youth as possible for an intelligent, happy, and successful par- ticipation in today ' s world. Lowery, Cadet Teacher from Norfolk Division, Virginia State College, lectures to class in U. S. Government. Studies The Social Studies Program in the Union-Kempsville High School has a dynamic role in the school curriculum. It is an avenue for fostering attitudes, skills, understandings, and competencies that are so essential to effective everyday liv- ing. The objectives of our program are to understand the world wide conflicts resulting from demands for resources; to understand that there will always be problems but that there are democratic ways of solving them; to understand the unending struggle of a proper balance between freedom and responsibility, to realize the importance of international relations throughout United States History. Mrs. Fredrica Ballard THE PURPOSE OF INDUSTRIAL COOPERATIVE TRAINING The purpose of Industrial Cooperative Training is to pro- vide, through work experience and related studies, vocational trade and industrial training opportunities . This program develops a cooperative association between the student, school, industry, and community . The I.C.T. program also points out the requirements and opportunities in the various occupations and designs the class so as to contribute to the school objectives and philosophy. Reeder d 82 ORGANIZATIONS Lambda Chi HONORARY SOCIETY The Lambda Chi provides a token of distinction for the high scholastic achievement and character of our students. To become a member of the Lambda Chi, one must be above average in scholarship. One must further be investigated by other members and • the faculty sponsor. After a potential member has been observed and in- terviewed by the members he is then initiated into the honor society. 84 Y- Teens The Y-Teens are the energetic " Miss Lady-likes " of Union Kempsville. This year they sponsored a Thanksgiving drive to help needy families. The Y-Teens are most prompt when it comes to lending a helping hand. We tip our hats to the Y-Teens. f Mr. Morgan, Assistant Principal, congratulat- ing students for a job well done. h Y-Teens are gathered beside their Thanks- giving baskets as the photographer captures their smiles. 85 Spanish Club Spanish Club The Spanish Club fosters the enjoyment of the music, art, and literature of the Spanish-speaking people, and an appreciation of the contributions of the Spanish to western civilizations. Officers Vivian Tyler, President Leverta Willie, Vice President Margaret Holley, Secretary Perlean Cherry, Business Manager Shirley Brockett, Publicity Chairman Bobby Mclntyre, Sgt.-at-arms Regina Floyd, Chaplain Marion Barham and Rudolph Lewis, Co-ordinators " Within the ever narrowing boundaries of the world, it has become evident that the ability to speak a language fluently, intelligently, and confidently is not only an ad- mired accomplishment but a definite necessity. " 86 Dramatic Club Drama is life. Master playwrights, brilliant actors, sincere directors, and unique settings make up drama. Many students possess dramatic abilities and enjoy dramatic activities. Future Homemakers of Ameria These girls are members of an organization which reaches through- out the United States and extends to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands--The Future Homemakers of America. As an integral part of the home- making program, FHA provides opportunities for students to have additional experiences in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. 1 Industrial Arts Club To foster the development of a strong foundation in the skills, knowledges, and attitudes regarding technical matters, is a goal of the Industrial Arts pro- gram. With their coffee tables, woodwork, and candle holders, among other projects, this club ' s members daily perfect their diversified skills. The year, 1966-67, will be marked by progress and achievement. 89 Sports Club The Sports Club annually sponsors a formal Valentine ' s Dance in order to raise funds to support the athletic teams. One of the primary projects of the Sports Club has been to finance the spring trip of the Track Team to the Penn Relays. Allen, distinguishes itself in its many public performances, including the annual winter and spring concerts. 91 Student Council The Student Council at Union Kempsville High School is an organiza- tion composed of representatives from each homeroom, and chosen by their classmates. These student monitors aim to promote citizenship among the student body, encourage and plan extracurricular student ac- tivities, and supervise student conduct. The student council is the most active organization in a school where students and their futures are fully developed through active participation. 4 Debating Society Participation in the lively discussions the Debating Society often finds itself engaged in helps the members become more aware and concerned with the controversial affairs which affect our nation and encourage the future leaders to train themselves to weigh facts before passing judgment. In addition to developing competence in public speaking, debating, also, more personally, stimulates thinking and provides training in research. They meet and plan their public ser- vice activities together. The Future Teachers of America and the Xinos give status to young ladies whose academic achievements may be limited, as well as to those per- sons who have special aptitudes, attitudes and interests. Xinos Future Teachers of America The Club also offers recrea- tional and well rounded develop- mental activities to all students. The club additionally offers opportunities for exploration in trades and emphasis on prepar- ing girls for college. 95 Library Club The Library Club is an organization composed of library assistants and stu- dents interested in the general welfare of the library . Members are taught proper procedures for circulating books, operation of audio-visual equipment, supervision of reference room, preparation of new books, etc. The Club is a member of the Virginia State Library Assistants Association. American Education Week was ob- served at U.K. at an assembly at which time Dr. Roy Wood was guest speaker and Mrs. Reuben Wills, P.T.A. pres., appeared. This Club tends to let Girlhood of our race know that the community is interested in the welfare of each girl. 97 Scholastic Team Honorary Society The publisher and editors of the LEDGER-STAR established the Tidewater Scho- lastic Achievement Team Award in order to recognize achievement of superb students, both in relationship to individual schools and in the whole Tidewater educational com- munity. This recognition is given in wide publicity in order to focus attention on the ex- ceptional pupils and to encourage others toward high scholastic accomplishment.
