1979 Annual Burgettstown High School Burgettstown PA 15021 Volume XXXIX In Memory Of Vonya Carter You were with us, Vonya, just a little while, But we’ll always remember your shy, sweet smile. God called you to Heaven above, A special child for Him to love. He called you from Earth s pain and strife To a place where you’d lead a better life. Though in memory you’re with us still. We know that our loss was just God’s will. Dedication Everyone knows that the dedication of the yearbook is an expression of our gratitude to a faculty member who has done something outstanding for the student body. This year's choice is Miss Lozosky. It would be impossible to list all the reasons for the selection we made. Miss Lozosky has sponsored the student government organizations for many years. She has been primarily responsible for making the Homecoming festivities memorable in recent years. Her hard work and devotion above and beyond the call of duty are much appreciated by her students and peers alike. This is our expression of thanks to Miss Lozosky for her dedication, not only in teaching, but in extracurricular areas and anything that touches the lives of the students at Burgettstown High School. 3 Homecoming Floats This year many students strived for the same goal and that goal was to win first place in the float competition. But unfortunately only one float can win first place, and this honor went to the Student Council’s float. Other organiza- tions who submitted floats were the sophomores, juniors, seniors, and the French Club. Everyone did a fine job on their floats. Raggi Crowned Queen 1st. row sitting - Denise Tunno. The volunteers were Mary Suehr, Lori Vega, and Kathy Ankley. These people volunteered to let the art students make papier-maches of their faces. Everyone seemed to be having a good time doing this project. Santa’s Workshop School Lobby Filled With Christmas Spirit This year the lobby was cleverly decorated as Santa's Workshop. In charge of this task were Mary Seuhr and Cheryl Scariot. Those who spent many hours preparing the lobby were Lynn Batnich, Dolores Dubich, Holly Mason, Theresa Terle, Michele Charlier, ZeeAnn Valenti, and Susan Scopel. Merry Christmas Up Up and away! 17 Pep Assemblies During the school year there were many pep assemblies so that the students could show their school spirit. The cheerleaders had many different activities for these assemblies. At some of these assemblies candy and other things were given to the class that showed the most school spirit. The pep assemblies helped the teams to play the-best they could and to bring home victories everytime. 18 Bonfire Many students showed their school spirit by attending the annual snake walk and bonfire. The snake walk started at the high school and proceeded to the football field. Dummies were burned and the cheerleaders led the enthusiastic group in cheers while the band helped with their music. Pepsi Skaters In Action During the school year we have had many assemblies. One of these assemblies was brought to us through the Pepsi Cola Company. The pepsi skaters showed us their skills on the many different types of boards and also instructed us on the safety procedures that should accompany the use of skate boards. _ 20 Pepsi Skaters Bob Judd Box 851 Greenfield, Mass. 01301 Shawn Moore Age 18 Bethal Park Penns. 21 Chip Fredrick Age 15 Baltimore, Md. The many fine voices of the chorus members helped to make the Christmas spirit ring through its audience. Alumni members Luanne Zharansky and Joy Rush returned this year to join in on this festive season celebration. 24 A Successful Season Festivity Guys And Dolls row 1 - Robin Lynn, Bill Walden, Jim Meccanic, John Dunmire, Corey Bent, James Bee, Roger Wise, Joe Pienkosky. row 2 - Terri Russell, Denise Tunno, Maria Dunn, Linda Gabler, Gary Yerace, Cristol Stravolakis, Zee Ann Valenti, Chuck Lawrence, Anna Marie Gonzales, Jackie Jablonsky, Flora Kandray, Vanessa Vangorder, Becky Tennyson, row 3 - Dolores Dubich, Carolyn Billie. Zee Ann Valenti, Marcy Meneely, Bob Maltony, Lori Morris. After many money making projects, the Spanish Club achieved their goal of a nine day trip to Italy. The group enjoyed the Papal Pasquale Address on Easter morning, tours of Ancient and Christian Rome and the Tivoli Gardens. Venice with its canals and Maze-like water ways especially enchanted the group. It was breath-taking to see Michelangelo's “David in the Academy Mueseum in Florence and to see his “Pieta in St. Peter’s Basilica. Most of all his paintings in The Sistine Chapel were very impressive. While in Rome the group took a field trip to the Isle of Capri and also to Assisi. En route to Sorento where they boarded the steamer for Capri, they stopped and viewed the ruins of Pompeii. Back across the Bay of Naples they stopped off for a typical Italian dinner of pasta, salad, veal, and fresh fruit. Discoteching on the bus from Naples to Rome was another pleasant memory the group will cherish. Because Spanish and Italian are very similar the group had little difficulty in understanding the Italians. Much like the Spaniards the group found the Italians to be very compassionate, friendly, and understanding. 32 Trip To Canada row 1 L. to R. - Lori Pakisz, Linda Sargent, Debbie Livingston. Football The Blue Devils started the year minus eighteen players from the championship team of the year before. Two way players Tom Reed, Bob Mitko, and Mike Bradley, along with defense specialist Ted Ward were the only returnees. With the high number of open positions, the pre season competition was fierce and heated. The result was a team with no less than eight new faces on offense and seven on defense, including three emerging sophomores. The team, molded around the leadership of the four veterans, improved in stature and performance with each practice and game. It played with great enthusiasm and dedication. Similar to the championship teams of years gone by hitting, tackling, blocking, and running as a true champion in its own right. However even the best teams need a little luck or a break here and there to maintain their level of competence. This year, unfortunately, fate cast an evil eye upon the Devils, and the breaks that did occur were against, rather than for the team. The team could have easily finished with a 9-1 record, for they truly out-played their opponents in three of the four losses, winning the statistical battle by large margins. The season culminated with a spectacular showing against McGuffey with Bob Mitko, not only breaking the single game record with 239 yards rushing but shattering the season record with 1152 yards rushing. This fete was a result of a great supporting cast, who gave of themselves so that Bob might achieve such note. With most of the talent played so well this year returning next year, the cry is . . . wait til next year. row 1 L. to R. - Bob Bertolotti, Danny Resnik, Bob Jenkins. We were a little shy and leery of the high school when we were seventh graders but by eighth grade we knew we were accepted. We went from the kings of junior high and feeling like the world was on our side back to the low man on the totem pole of the senior high side. In tenth grade we struggled over dissecting, shorthand, and retailing but somehow we managed to make it to the eleventh grade. Who can forget the feeling of excitement we all felt on the last day of school in eleventh grade, knowing when we came back it would be for our last year. Senior year is packed with more memories than any other year as we all tried to make our senior year that magical year we all had hoped it would be. Together we worked hard on our senior float and we cried together the night of our last football game. Pep assemblies were always led by the enthusiasm of the seniors because we knew our assemblies were getting to be fewer and fewer. As the school year neared its end. despite the happiness of finally getting out for good, we were saddened because of the friends we knew we were going to be leaving behind. We can put Burgettstown High School in the back of our minds but we will always have the memories school brought to us. As we all go our own separate ways a part of us will remain here with all of our memories.
