The Old Southl' The 1972 Junior-Senior Prom, The Old South, was held on June 2, 1972. The couples entered through an ivy twined trellis and were presented with a small basket of artificial flowers. The murals on the walls portrayed life within a plantation-like setting. The rock group Timothy, who furnished the evening's entertainment, played from the stage which was decorated as a showboat. The throne for the king and queen was set inside an old-fashioned gazebo. At 10:00 Pam Phillips and Jim Donohue were crowned king and queen and Pam was presented a bouquet of red roses. Trudy Taylor and Carol Jelovich and Rose Mary Quader and Gary Waters were chosen as attendants to the Royal Court. The evening proved to be very enjoyable for all present. 26 1

Council Leadership development is the prime responsibility of our schools. Training young people in the science of living and working together in a democracy may well be the key to America's survival as a way of life. Young citizens must be given experience in decision-making if they are to meet their challenges. Groups require effective leadership to hold them together and to lead them in the direc- tion they choose to go as they work for common goals and purposes. Qualities of a good citizen, a good leader, or a good follower are similar. The need for quality leaders has never been greater. The world is dependent upon leaders, free of greed and desire for personal gain, to make the world a place in which people may live as free individuals. Thus demand for a trained citizenry must be met. Union High School hopes to meet this demand through the Student Coun- cil. Student Council offers an opportunity for citizens of a school to learn to lead, to follow, and to direct others.
