THE “U” 67 Another year is gone. For seniors this has been a hectic year. For underclassmen it has been one more step up the ladder. For teachers it has been one more year of satisfaction in knowing that America's youth is further educated. Seniors, underclassmen, and faculty will all look back on 1967 and re- member these school days. Now, as the seniors leave this school with mixed feelings of emotion, they thank all those who have made these twelve years the most fruitful years of their lives. A heartfelt thanks to God who, more than anyone else, has made it possible. i Dedication Miss Elizabeth L. Scott, for the past twenty-nine years, has been our school librarian and upon the completion of the school year will retire. We extend our sincere appreciation for all that she has done throughout the years for the student body. Miss Scott is a graduate of Muskingum College, where she obtained an A. B., and Penn State, where she received a Master's Equivalent in Library Science. She is a graduate of our own Union High School, where she returned in 1930 to become our school librarian. Miss Scott has been very active with the student body. She sponsored the first yearbook in 1941 and remained the sponsor until 1952. She has been a very influential Tri-Hi-Y Alpha advisor since 1948. Her feelings about our school are: It would be like a mother criticizing her child if I said anything about our school. I have grown with it. I am so proud of all the fine people we have graduated. Many thanks, Miss .Scott, and sincere wishes to you for the future. 2 Dedication Having taught in conditions from a one- room school house in Hanlin Station to our present Union High School building, Mr, Malone realizes the duration of forty-one years of dedicated service to his profession. With his Bachelor of Science Degree, which he received in 1925, he has taught general science, history, and biology. At one time he was also the advisor of both the Hi-Y Club and a Biology Club. At the end of our present school term Mr. Malone is retiring, leaving the limelight of a teaching position at Union but hardly leaving our cherished memories. In Mr. Malone's farewell state- ments he felt that teaching young people for the past forty-one years has tended to keep him feeling young. Mr. Malone, we sincerely thank you, and we hope that we have given you at least a little satisfaction in comparison to all the knowledge, guidance, and friendship that you have given us. 3 Table of Contents Academics 8 Seniors 32 Underclassmen 72 Organizations 98 Student Life 124 Sports 144 Ads 174 4 In Memoriam Mrs. Harris, who came to Union over eighteen years ago after teaching at Mid- way High School, became an institution here. To almost three thousand students over the years, her name was synonymous for Senior English and Literature. On the other hand, however, she was a very sympathetic person, who would not shirk when help was needed by someone. As every eighth grade class before us, we elected our first class officers. The results were as follows: president, Renay Warchol; vice- president, Judy Beard; secretary-treasurer, Dave Boni. Most of us attended the eighth grade's annual Halloween Party. The American Legion Award was presented to Donald Giacomelli and Patricia Patterson. One might think that ours was a very ordinary first year at Union except for one thing that distinguished us from all other eighth grades— the fire. In the spring of our first year of high school, a fire completely destroyed the old high school building. Thus we go down in history as being the last graduating class ever to begin our education at the old Union. We began our freshman year in the new high school building on Bavington Road. Our class officers were: president, Jess Alonso; vice-president, Jerry Kranak; secre- tary-treasurer, Linda Jones. In October we held our freshman hayride and dance. In the fall of 1964 we officially entered the senior high wing of the school as sopho- mores. We elected Adam Rossi, Tom Mavrich, and John Muscaro to the offices of presi- dent, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer, respectively. The following girls repre- sented the sophomore class on our cheering squad: Sandra Baronio, Saundra Clark, Trudy Latella, Joyce Nicksick, Sharon Sebolt, and Linda Sinnett. Linda Bianchini was chosen as part of the majorette squad. Judi Kavensky and Jerry Petricca attended Washington County Band. Saundra Clark and Linda Jones were sophomore attendants to the Home- coming Court. In our junior year we elected the following as our class officers: president, Nancy Smiley; vice-president, John Muscaro; secretary-treasurer, Janet Carter. We also e- lected John Muscaro to represent our class on the Athletic Council. Renay Warchol be- came a cheerleader, and Linda Jones, Patricia Patterson, and Judy Scott became ma- jorettes. Our magazine campaign was a complete success. Our junior play, entitled Ask Any Girl, featured Judi Kavensky, Michael DeCook, and Dave Boni in the leading roles. The 1966 Prom was successful because of the hard work of the juniors on the decor- ating committee who chose the theme, Camelot. Three members of our class were exchange students to South America: Trudy Latella to Bogota, Columbia; Nancy Smiley to Rosario, Argentina; Judi Kavensky to Panama City, Panama. During the school year 1965-1966 our school spirit and enthusiasm seemed to reach its lowest point. As our senior year began, we tried to improve upon the morale of the students and the conditions in the school. The first big event in our senior year was Homecoming. The Student Council, along with the various clubs in the school and the Blue Devil Band, worked to make the 1966 Homecoming the most successful thus far. Linda Jones was elected Homecoming Queen with Saundra Clark as her senior attendant. Patti Trevena was added to our majorette squad, and Marilyn Kucher was added to the cheering squad. Senior class officers were elected as follows: president, Adam Rossi; vice-president. Joe Kubovic; secretary-treasu- rer, Janice Mecannic. James Matijevich and Nancy Kaste were elected Football King and Queen. Art Capozzoli received the McElhaney Award. Our senior play was entitled The Great Big Doorstep. The leading roles were played by Vonice Mis and Adam Rossi. We, as a class, feel proud in saying that in our senior year we have boosted the morale of the student body. Our cheerleaders, led by Saundra Clark, have done a wonderful job. in increasing the school spirit. Our Blue Devil Band has greatly changed since we were in the eighth grade. With the support of the student body and a great deal of work on the part of the members of the band, we now have a band in which to take pride. The Hi- Lite, whose editor-in-chief is Judi Kavensky, has brought reading pleasure to hundreds of people. The Yearbook, edited by Marie Tulle, has given the senior class the prestige and recognition it well deserves. We ask that we be remembered for our success and our failure as a class. We hope that we have done more good than harm, and we leave some work unfinished as our legacy to the class of 1968. 34 Class Officers Janice Mecannic, Secretary-Treasurer; JoeKubovic, Vice President; Adam Rossi, President. 35 PEGGY ABBOTT Commercial Ambition: Beautician. Misfortunes have plagued the team as far back as our first scrimmage when senior tackle, John Moe Muscaro, was injured with a broken leg. Injuries again overtook us in the opening game with Madonna when fallback, DaveScruppi, was scratched from the starting line because of a carti- lage separation in the knee. This game was ended with Madonna taking the win, 20-7. This was their first win over Union in 6 years. Our first win came on Homecoming against Chartiers- Houston with the score being 19-7, but again the following week we were defeated by a powerful Midland eleven. The following three games also were taken as losses and our next win came over McGuffey, 14-12. Our final game was recorded as a win with Union scoring 32 points to the opposing Homer-Center's 15 points. This victory left the Blue Devils with a discouraging 3-6 record. In all, injuries accounted for losing five of Unions starting lineup, but the rest of the team never gave up and ended the year with a triumphant win. Korpos, M. Stiegel, A. Stieminger, T. Finley, G. There was an upset in the second game of the season when Union toppled Steubenville Big Red by the score of 8 to 1. In league competition Union split their record with a 6-6 mark. Union's five returning lettermen will attempt to form a solid nucleus for a successful season this year. P. Fuller, E. Slopek, R. Baileys, J. Alonso, J. Koraido. (Not pictured, M. Riddle, T. J.
