MARY SMITH “Girl of the Decade” 1968 - 1977 Mary, dedication of this annual to you is not in recognition of the physical and mental strain of your Girls' League leadership. Never mind the wind, the cold, and Who's going to help me sell concessions this week? with no replies. Never mind the repeat of this for making sandwiches to serve players after basketball games. Never mind the organization problems of the Mother-Daughter Tea. Never mind all these hours; they were donations and not so important. Your job was teaching math, and for the student with trouble adding and subtracting, you built confidence and an ability to cope; for the college-bound, you gave a foundation for the lab and classroom that has withstood the weight of the modern technological age. It is for this the annual is dedicated. Thank You, Mary! Administration Cooks, Patty Puckett and Holly Barber wishs the day was over. Team: LEFT TO RIGHT, Coach Darce Driskel, Charlie Henry, Jeff Woodside, Alan McCorkle, Lyle Brittain, Tony Conroy, Henerv Gabel, Tim Puckett, Don Heideman, Tony Morelli, Mike Ashley. This year's varsity basketball team was a pleasant surprise to every Redside fan. Not expected to do much by most basketball critics, the Redsides won 16 games against 6 losses, won 2 tournaments, finished 2nd in the league, and more importantly, finished 2nd in the District tournament. In physical appearance, the Redsides did not scare anybody. There was only one six-footer (Tony Conroy) and although there was some good individual quickness, team quickness was at best, average. What could not be measured was the self-confidence and desire each person possed. Also, the willingness to work hard to make up for any disadvantages that they thought would face them in the upcoming contests. Constant concern with the physical fundamentals of the game enabled them to stay close with opponents, and Knowing the game (the mental fundamentals ) won it for them. Of the 16 games won this year, 9 were by 9 or less points and only one was by more than 15 points. Most games were won in the last few minutes and some of these were the results of rallies in which the Redsides had to make up deficits at times as large as 17 points. To rally time and time again proved that as a team, these young men possed poise and character which are the foundation of success. It truly was a rewarding season for every REDSIDE! The Redsides JV basketball team lost to Heppner, 56-54, to finish the 1976-77 season with a 6-10 record. Junior Mike Ashley led the scoring with 148 points, followed by Don Heideman, a sophomore, with 133. Dan Keillor, a freshman, led the rebounding with 126. Other point totals were: Keillor (129), George Ashley (65), Cliff Satanus (61), Henery Gable (58), Dewayne Smotherman (54), Galen Reese (25), Fred Ashley (22), Glen Crawford (21), Charlie Henery (14) and Gordon Weaver (10). 32 W.C.H.S. Running, running In the snow This familiar chant frequently echoed off the homes, stores, canyons and hillsides of the Maupin area during the winter months of 1976-1977. Running and conditioning is a way of life for a wrestler and especially a Redside wrestler. Hours of strenuous experiance coupled with strict diet control typifies every day grappler. However, his is the satisfaction of knowing he has done his best, in, every way, to reach the goal of success in wrestling. This years wrestling team was sparked by tremendous team spirit and overwhelming determination. Captain, Mark Moran played a key role in leadership, and along with junior Darryl Keillor provided the needed materials to the team. Marks absence will be felt deeply in next years program. Ultimate honors won by Redsides wrestlers were; third in district at 123 Robbie Ziegler, third in district at 106 David Woods, fourth in district at 130 Jeff Parman. Along with the above, the following individuals will contribute highly to the 77-78 season; Jeff Clemens, Shad Shibahera, Greg Barnhart, Pat Cook, Clyde the glide Hayes, Alan Swearingen, Ron Jones, and Richard Dalhgren. The 1976-1977 wrestling season was rewarding and extremely enjoyable for me as a coach. I attribute this to the fine young men and women who make up the wrestling program at W.C.U.H.S. Students had been chosen after the try-outs in early November and spent several weeks of late night rehearsals In preparation. The final dress rehearsal was performed before the rest of the studer student body. Fortunately this performance was a rehearsal complete with the pictures falling off the wall and glasses breaking. However, everything was well cemented by the final evening performance, and the actors did an excellent job. They had a well designed set, complete with antique furniture. All students and the director also learned alot from working and laughing together, and many planned to return for future performances. 70 Mortimer (Ben Troxel) and Elaine (Sandy Chaberlin) celebrate the part that he isn't a Brewster, while Abby (Kim Earl) and Martha (Cindy Pualson) look on.
