The optimism appeared to be well founded when they pulled off an opening day upset of the Central Jersey Group 4 Champions North Edison. However the second game caused some-worry when the Farmers playing with injuries were upset by Westfield. tion that another loss could possibly eliminate them from a berth in the State Championship playoffs. Union finished the season with nine straight victories including those over state powers such as Montclair and Barringer and the cli- matic championship game with Plainfield. There were many noteworthy achievements by others who played a major role in the success of the squad. The 1978-79 season will long be remembered with pride and happi- ness. The team overcame many difficulties such as injuries and the fact that there were only three seniors on varsity to finish with a record of 6-6. We placed 3rd in both the Union County Touma- ment and the Seton Hall Touma- ment. In the district competitions- we also placed 3rd. Outstanding wrestlers included junior Doug Martin with I0 pins Philip Salge Rich Cohen most-improved fin- ishing with a record of 9-6. With much hard work and dedication and the help of their new coach, Mr. DeStephan, the girls improved their record 5096 over last yearls record. They ended their season at 8-l2. Gwen Jackson led the team in points 310, shooting 38'Zp from the floor. Co-captain Yolanda Williams tossed in 244 points and led the team in rebounds with 249. The final I9 and l record included the second half of a consecutive win streak which went as far as 28 matches, set- ting a new school mark. The season also produced a league record for co- captain John Gaffga which amounted to three regular season perfect scores of l00. The girls perform annually in the school play, arts fes- tival, apparatus show, and in addition, make up routines for their own enjoyment. The girls meet twice a week forthe whole year. They receive letters for meeting the requirements of good attendance and partici- pation in the various activities. The captain for the 78-79 season is Nancy McKenzie. This year a Disco Club was organized due to the increas- ing popularity of disco dancing. The club consists of over twenty members, among them are the best dancers in Union High School.
