' uw.--' Four wonderful and enjoyable years have been spent in Union High School. They have been a period of reparation for the adult role to be layed by the members of tile Class of 1954. All through our lives this important "phase" will never be forgotten. . - just as we have changed the spelling of "phase", so we our- selves have been changed. Clubs and classes, games and gab fests, tests and themes, dances and dreams-all these have played a part in making the years fruitful, both physically and mentally., lt is just another."faze" in our lives, but while it lasted, it was the most "Fabulous Faze" of all. l a J ? af A ,B J 3 5 5 I I n ' l f 5 I , K 1 I 53 ' to e q?. X Student linunlzil Our student government, better known to us as the Student Council, is composed of one representative from each homeroom. The Council meets on the first and third Monday of each month to discuss and try to settle student problems. To Mrs. Ruth Deusinger we owe thanks for the helpful guidance she has given our Student Council. The responsibility of supervising student activities is great and has led to the formation of seven standing com- mittees which care for the various problems that arise. The Rules Committee sets up new rules for the Student Council and other groups and decides which rules are useless. This committee works with the helpful advice of Miss Charlotte Gross. Lois Zirkel is its chair- man. Many helpful tasks have been done throughout the year by the School Service Committee. Keeping the juke-box in proper condition at all times is one of its tasks. It also is credited with the success of our foot- ball victory dances. Another service accomplished by this committee consisted of selling tickets, football pins, pencils and pennants. Peter Jensen is chairman of the School Service Committee, and Mr. Floyd Lee acts as advisor. This year the Athletic Committee and Activities Committee were merged to form one committee, having two advisors: Mr. Mente and Miss Feuchter. Their duties include assisting in athletic contests and intramural programs, taking care of the trophy case and helping build and maintain school spirit thru pep rallies. The Hospitality Committee has the responsibility of welcoming all visitors who come to our school. They take students, as well as adult visitors, on tours throughout the building, Especially do they prove their usefulness when eighth grade students from the other township schools come to see what the high school is like. Their advisor is Mrs. Pierce and the chairman is Lesly Asnis. With the advice of Mr. Consales this committee arranges all assem- blies, including those with other schools. This year it has sponsored hired talent for assemblies which were free to the students, and a two hour assembly with an admission charge, the profits going to provide better assemblies. Gail Rettinger is chairman of this committee. The Election Committee supervises all elections and counts all votes. It has the power to prepare and distribute petitions and ballot forms to all candidates, and also has the power to determine the qualifications each candidate must have. Kenneth Morhart is chairman. The judicial Court consists of the Student Council otticers and the chairmen of standing committees. Through its trials of student offenders it punishes the violator in accordance with his attitude, and tries to im- prove his attitude toward the school. The members of the judicial Court also choose the four final nominees for each office in the Student Coun- cil. Faculty advisor for the Court is Miss Pinko. Chairman is Vincent Zimbardo. V". The team was lead by All-County Emil Ruegner and Nick Biondi, second team, All-County. These fellows were our co-captains. The team was exceptionally strong defensively, being fourteenth in the state. There were a couple of games which we should have won, but owing to those unpre- dictable breaks that make football the great sport that it is, we didn't bring home the 'bacon'g actually the team was much better than the record shows. The fellows on the team will never be able to forget those dream rides with, gthe slimmest of 'em all, Charley, the Cigar," and his ultra modern and powerful uses. Who can forget those locker room antics with the plunger, towels, and cleaning brushes, that fragrant aroma of our locker room, Mr. Keller and his amazing tape, those invigorating calisthenics, our one and only "Suicide Squad", those loveable tackling dummies, the lineman's friend-the charging sled, and those never ending wind sprints. Our schedule is becoming more powerful with the addition of Group IV Asbury Park and Plainfield. Next year Coach Garrabrant will be developing another fine team minus a great bunch of guys who gave everything they could for Union: Mike "Motion" Vieira, Dick "Tank" Houghton, our co-captains, plus a host of others who can be proud of the record they leave behind them. fa' its A sos-9 af 8 39113213 as 9 9: 9 qi 'sau 49 53.55, 40 514' N 9 Qdgpxg 3!j.sa3,541gs3 ,g,E,?54,S43,, ., xg ,Qn -?q Q V 1 5 ,S-gaf-.A-75,,1s4,.kfQJ!'Z A042 A x1"',f-:La -55 Hur- f N 'gp f- 4 , , 6, ax-.3 -wg LA - 7: ,,,A V ,. ,gt 4 , Qp3fJ?5ff:5i. The trophy named after a late Farmer Wrestling Coach who lost his life in World War Il was won by Nick in 1953. Three runner ups were made by Emil Ruegner Paul Altmann and Dick Poole. Battiste Villa bat- tled to third place. The total points of the UHS team were more than double those of the nearest school. Roselle Park Unions traditional rival was de- feated 27 to 3. For our coach Walt Shallc-ross as an alumnus of Park this year was one of excep- tional success including as it did his first State Championship and a defeat of his former Alma Mater by his ovin team.
