THESAURUS 1981 UNION ENDICOTT HIGH SCHOOL 1200 EAST MAIN STREET ENDICOTT, NEW YORK 1 VOLUME 35 U-E ALMA MATER Altho' Bing has always favored the violet's dark Blue And the gentle sons of Elmira to the blue and white are true We will own the lilies slender nor honor shall they lack. While the tiger stands defender of the Orange and the Black Thro the tour long years ot high school midst the scenes we know' so well. Stands the playing old Alma Mater like a proud old gracious queen And forever we remember as we pass — and then look back, That I he tiger stands defender of the Orange and the Black TABLE OF CONTENTS SENIORS 18 FACULTY ..............72 UNDERCLASSMEN 108 ACTIVITIES 158 SPORTS 204 SCHOOL LIFE 255 INDEX 273 4 The happiest day — the happiest hour my seared and blighted heart hath known. 6 Of power! said I? Sports 257 r v Mae West Many events have occurred in the 1980's and 198 Vs. With the tragic death of John Lennon, the passing of Mae West and Colonel Sanders, and the capturing of the Embassy in Iran. Extensive pictures were finally taken from Voyager 1 of what Saturn looked like up close. Similar events are taking place every day. Mae West was born on August 17, 1893, the daughter of a Paris born Matilda Dilker and a light weight boxer Battling lack West She made her first debut in Vaudeville at the age of five, in a singing and dancing act in which she was known, prophetically, as ‘'Baby Vamp West's first hit performance was as the dance hall queen in the 1928 play Diamond Lil. After she hit Hollywood in 1932 she was a star from her Debut in Night After Night to 1940 when she starred with Fields in Chickadee. Lennon Mae West died at the age of 87 She died just three weeks after leaving the hospital, where she had spent three months recuperating from a mild stroke. Col. Sanders This year marks the shooting death of John Lennon, a tragedy that won't soon be forgotten. At the age of sixteen Lennon began to assemble the group that was to be world known as the Beatles Lennon and Mc- Cartney banded together as a composer team playing in Liverpool and Germany By 1961 they joined with George Harrison and Ringo Starr Within the following decade they sold more than 250 million records and made three movies, A Hard Days Night,'' Help, and Let It Be. Following the break-up of the group, Lennon and his wife Yoko lived in total seclusion for almost five years. After that they recorded his final album Dou- ble Fantasy. After firefighters sear- ched for the cause of the blaze, it was discovered that the Hotel had lacked several fire safety codes. Designers cut holes in walls so that the guests could look down onto lower floors; these same walls were originally designed for tire protection. It was also discovered that the hotel had lacked a sprinkler system on all floors except the first, basement, and the twenty-sixth floor. The death toll in the fire had reached at least 85 people while hun- dreds of others were injured. ___________________A VOYAGER I The I980's was a time when the road to discovery was still open. With the use of the Voyager the world has been able to see what the rings of Saturn and the atmosphere are really like. Also the Voyager discovered one of the ten moons that rotate around Saturn. This moon Titan was found to be so cold at the surface that the estimated temperature was almost 330 degrees below zero. POLITICS (PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION) This year marks the changing of Presidents. Reagan arrives in office at a time when the nation is touched with the limits of growth and resources, and threats to its domination in world affairs. As Ex-President Jimmy Carter backs down, Ronald Reagan promises to make the ’’office work for him. Ronald Reagan staled that the office in which he will lead is not going to be like those of the pyramid builders FDR or LBJ, but that he will shape his office after the quieter presidents like Ike and Calvin Coolidge, who believed in the rule: If it ain’t broken, don't fix it. 259 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Who Shot J.R.? After months of waiting for the new season of shows to begin people were wondering Whodunnit? The answer to the question was delayed even longer due to the actor's strike. On that particular episode of the famous show, Dallas ' the culprit was revealed. Who was it? It was Kristin Shepherd, J.R.’s sister-in-law and former mistress. It was also revealed in that episode that Kristin was pregnant by |.R. Natural 'Vbisasters In 1980 the strongest quake in 70 years hit Italy. The quake measured 6.5 on the richter scale, and the death toll rose to over 3,000. This made it the worst quake in history. The shock was felt from Sicily into the Bay of Salmero, The quake leveled over 29 cities and towns Rescue attempts were hampered by debris and rubble. It was truly a disaster. Fire Closes School On Monday, September 9, Union-Endicott High School was shut down due to a small fire. The cause of the fire was an electrical shortage in the boiler room. The boiler room and the school's air- conditioning system were filled with smoke. The fire department stayed long enough to start the fans and clear the smoke. The firemen claimed the panel which controlled the supply of electricity to the school's air conditioning system had been smoldering for hours. Crisis (Crisis) ... Countdown to freedom ... on the 442nd day deliverance was finally at hand. The first word came from Iran.
