The THESAURUS is a myriad of pictures and words, all rolled up into a colorful book. It is a priceless storehouse of informa- tion to which we can return again and again. We go to the THESAURUS with the wish that something we have already known will come back to us again. And it does; sending us willingly backwards in time. The THESAURUS is a still-life of all the activity and motion of the year 1977. it is a marvel- ous collection of people and emotions, designed for our use and enjoyment. a Table of Contents Class 1 WORDS EXPRESSING ABSTRACT RELATIONS Celebration â Amusemeni â Wonder - Beauty â People.........1 Class II PICTURES RELATING TO SPACE Freshmen â Sophomores â Juniors...........................14 Class III PICTURES RELATING TO THE INTELLECTUAL FACULTIES Faculty â Academics.......................................68 Class IV PICTURES RELATING TO MATTER Seniors................................................ 102 Class V PICTURES RELATING TO THE VOLUNTARY POWERS Individual Will (Activities)â Intersocial Will (Sports) .. , 154 and 196 Class VI PICTURES RELATING TO THE SENTIMENT Friendship â Socialityâ Love â Gratitude Seclusion â End .. .250 and 268 INDEX 258 CELEBRATION: jubilation; triumph; debut; salute; rejoice. President Jimmy Carterâs long, once solitary journey from Plains, Georgia carried him to the White House in January with a victory forged from the traditional Demo- cratic Party coalition of the Old South and industrial North. Carter was declared the victor over President Gerald Ford early November 3, when his electoral vote total reached 272. two more than the 270 needed for election. Wisconsin and Mississippi were the states that established the Demo- cratic candidateâs majority in the Associated Press tabulation. The closeness of the vote raised questions about absentee ballots, which were handled differently in each Slate. Some States said absentee ballots had already been counted, or would have no effect; some said absentee ballots are accepted only up until the hour the polls close and are counted with other votes on election night; some said they donât count absentee votes until the day after. Gerald Ford asked the blessings of God and the Nation for Jimmy Carter, surrounded by his proud and shaken family, a big man in a blue suit swal- lowing defeat. The Fords faced the formal concession fighting back tears, and mostly succeeding. When they walked into the room, losers for the first time in their lives, all the noise died. The President, his voice reduced to a croak from 11 days of non-stop campaigning, stepped up to the podium and announced he had conceded the cliff-hanger presidential election and had told Carter so by phone call and telegram . Ford knew it was over by the time he went to bed at 3:15 a.m. So he slept a bit late, got up at 9 a.m., had break- fast, got his raw throat doctored and bowed out as the 38th President of the United States. With his chin up. Returning to Plains from his election headquarters in Atlanta, Carter received a tumultuous, emotional welcome from a crowd that included most of the town's 638 residents. He said he was looking forward to 'an enjoyable next 4 years. Beaming his now-famous smile, Carter told the crowd, I told you 1 didn't intend to lose. The latest returns showed Carter carrying 22 states and the District of Columbia, while Ford had 26. Photos Compliments of Gannett Newspapers and A.P. He said he started Hustler because I wanted to deal with sex. I wanted to write about it as my friends talked about it on the street ... I did. and it cost me my freedom.' At a news conference he was quoted as saying, For every American to have the right to choose whatever books or magazines he wants to read, isn't that what freedom is all about? Iâm not defending the Hustler magazine, only the principle of the right to publish it. To people who accuse me of hiding behind the 1 Amendment, thank God we have the 1 Amend- ment to hide behind. or where would people like William Morrissey (Flynt's judge) have us? Swine Flu, Legionnaireâs Disease, A bacterium that medical science knows little about is believed to have caused the Legionnaires Disease that killed 29 persons after a convention in Philadelphia last July. After an extensive search, sleuthing scientists declared that the cause of the disease was a bacteria- and other exotic maladies. like organism never before isolated. Following this discovery, came an outbreak of another unknown disease called Swine Flu, In an effort to thwart an epidemic of this disease, a vaccine was prepared and distributed. The vaccine was then linked to an outbreak of paralysis called Gull lain-Banes syn- drome, characterized by weakness in the limbs, loss of sensation, diminished reflexes, and sometimes severe paralysis. When the paralysis was linked to the vac- cine, it was halted, and studies begun to determine why the 2 were linked. on iOorty Vine Photos Compliments of Gannett Newspapers and A.P. The Energy Shortage . . . As Temperatures dropped and snow drifts rose millions of families around the country felt the cold as their energy supply dwindled, and sometimes faded altogether. Schools and businesses were forced to close early as gas company officials asked for drastic measures to conserve energy.
