They excelled in marching as well as playing, as was evident by the fact that they were awarded second place in the Iackson and Martin Christmas Parades, in competition with bands from all over West Tennessee. They presented two excellent concerts during the year that were received with great enthusiasm. To add to the laurels, the band entered the West Tennessee Music Festival of Iackson, Tennessee, and won a Superior rating in Class C. Wherever there was a parade or any sort of festivity you could see that "crack Union Ci.ty High School Band" and we were proud to know they were ours! 49 GLEE CLUB First Row, left to right: Nancy Todd, Carolyn Crenshaw, Ianice Primrose, Shirley Walker, Margaret Canady, Neta Bailey, Miriam Watt, Sylvia Tuck, Donna Gardner, Barbara Smith. The Tornadoes came back to score twice in the second and once in the third to defeat them 19-6. Mayfield rolled over Union City with an easy victory scoring four touchdowns and two extra points, while Union City crossed the goal only one time with Young scoring for the Tornadoes. Union City defeated the Humboldt Rams with long runs and beautiful passes. Humboldt scored first and then it was Union City the rest of the way with King and Moore scoring one each and Young scoring two for the Tornado cause. The Tornado struck the Tide of Trenton in the featured game of the Big Ten Conference. Young scored first, taking a nice pass from Moore to go all the way. Trenton scored later in the second quarter for their lone score. King took the ball on his own forty and made the final touchdown to win the game 14-7. The Ripley Tigers came to Union City riding high and when the game ended it had been Ripley all the way. Union City played their hearts out but it was of no use. Ripley was too powerful. Baldridge and Young scored the Union City touchdowns. The fighting Tornado won a close one from Halls when, late in the last quarter, Bill Tidwell snapped up a Halls fumble and ran for thirty- nine yards before he was tackled. The run set up a touchdown for Union City that defeated Halls 21-14. After this run Baldridge went over for the winning touchdown. Homecoming seemed to be a great surprise for Union City. They played host to the Blue Devils and trounced them l4-7 to rack up their fifth victory. One of the most beautiful plays of the game was Bussie Moore's bullet pass to Eddlemon which netted 43 yards, two yards short of pay dirt. A hard-driving, hard-hitting pack of Martin Panthers banged out a 20-7 decision over Union City Tornadoes at College Field in Martin. lt was all Martin with Bussie Moore scoring the lone Tornado touchdown in the final quarter. The Union City Tornadoes ended their home stand at Turner Field playing Dyersburg in one of the best games of the season. Young passed to Eddlemon for the first touchdown, then Bussie Moore passed to Young for a B0 yard touchdown. Next Young passed to Eddlemon for a 39 yard touchdown, and then Moore passed to Rogers for another touchdown. With all this beautiful playing Union City still didn't win-final score 27-27. The Tornadoes defeated the Fulton Bulldogs by a one-sided score of 20-0 in the final game of the l95l season before a small crowd of chilled fans. It was Union City from every angle, running, passing and kicking. King, Young, Baldridge, and Moore scored the touchdowns for Union City with Moore kicking four extra points. i 1 I BUYS' BASKETBALL TEAM First Row, lett to right lkneelingl: Billy Ioe Roney, Charles Moore, Iimmy Burress, Bobby Young, Iere Baldridge. He has proved to be invaluable. His shooting, rebounding, and dribbling was a sight to see. He is a very outstanding athlete and Clinton's loss was definitely our gain. BILL RONEY-"Buck" has a promising future. He could be counted on for his usual four points in every game. He handles the ball well and is a hook shot artist. WILTON LYNN4Wilton had a streak of bad luck and was out about half of the season. He is a fine re- bound man and his hook shot is hard ko stop. CHARLES MOORE-His leadership and ability won "Bussie" the honor of captain. He gave his opponent a pain in the neck and could always be depended upon. HARRY DE KING-Harry Dee wasn't a regular on the squad but saw plenly of action in the pivot position. He did a nice job this year. Second Row: IIIVIMY BURRESS-Iimmy promises to be great material. This was his first year of actual play and his natural eye for the basket helped lead his team to glory several times. STOCKTON ADAMS-Stockton wasn't a regular but when he was in there he was giving his all. He was known for his scrap. IERRY MCDANIEL-UCHS will be fortunale in hav- ing Ierry back next year. He can hit the basket and will be in there fighting for a place on the first live nexl year. CHARLES COX-Charles will be back again next year to add his ability to the Tornado five. Although a sub this year, Charles used his height to a greal advant- age in the games he played and always was in there fighting. IERE BALDRIDGE-Iere, a sub this year, still has two more years to play and should prove to be one of the scrappiest players Union City has ever had in a few years. BOBBY YOUNG--They say good things always come in small packages and that was the case with Bobby. He was fast and hard fighting. Union City will have him for two more years.
