We, the senior class of '59 dedicate this Anvil to Union City High second foreign exchange student, Jose Barce. Jose has brought us much closer to his people and his native land the Philippines. In addition to his hobbies--reading, modeling airplanes, and playing chess--he has an 'artistic talent which has proved to be a valuable asset to our class. Jose not only graduated Valedictorian of his own class but has done as well in his studies here. Jose' has taught us a priceless lesson, that race and color aren't - or shou1dn't be --important. We have gladly accepted Jose' as a fellow American citizen and classmate. We are honored to dedicate this Anvil to you, Jose' Barce. Sponsored by UNION CITY RECREATION CLASS ADVISORS We the class of "59" would like to express our thanks and apprecia- tion to our class advisers. Mrs. Marzke has been with us for three years. She has given un- selfishly of her time and efforts to help us succeed in all our activities. This is the first year we have had the privilege of having Mrs. Baldwin and Mrs. Hosier with us, but they have contributed much of their time and energy to our interests. You were all a great inspiration and we loved working with you. As we go forth to take our place in society, we will always re- member our three wonderful class advisers. As sophomores we were the first to sell candy instead of jello. We spon- sored the "Sock Hop" which was the first record hop to be held in the Union City High School. As juniors we set out to break more records by selling 83,100.00 worth of magazines, which was 3600.00 over our goal. This is to date the largest sum of money ever made by a Union City High School class selling magazines. Our next spectacular as Juniors was the "Wes Hopkins Hop." At this record hop we featured the famous KYW Cleveland disc jocky, Wes Hopkins. We are proud to say that at this event we had the largest crowd ever to attend a Union City High School dance. In April we presented a most successful play, which was a three -act comedy entitled "So This is Bliss." On May 23, 1958 we put on a lavish Jr.-Sr. Banquet. On May 23, 1958, we presented a real ultraex- travanganza, a thousand dollar prom! The theme for the prom was Oriental Gardens with the fabulous music of the 15 piece "Wes Scott Orchestra." On September 3, 1958, we entered the hall of good old Union City High School as the "High and Mighty" Senior class. The first big event of the year was the "Tom Trot," which was very successful. It was all round and square dancing, featuring music by the Happy Gang. As a public service we spon- sored buses to away football and basketball games. To raise money we held weekly fudge sales. Our much awaited class trip will be held from May 14 to May 17, 1959. Baccalaureate is scheduled for May 31, 1959, and the Senior class night will be held June 1, 1959. The big day of commencement will ar- rive on ,Tune 2, 1959. Although this day has been long awaited, we, the class of '59' will always cherish the memory of days spent at our Alma Mater, Union City High. Sponsored by A. I.. They have experience in shelf reading, charging in and out books, assisting other students in reference work and in general library work. During the year they had a dinner and attended one of the basketball games as a group. The Pennsylvania Nurserymen's Association selected Union City for the landscaping award and the Pennsylvania Rural Safety Council pre- sented the club with a certificate for farm and home safety educa- tion. The landscaping award was presented to only two schools in Pennsylvania. Since the F.F.A. boys made the plantings, the mem- bers of the organization are gratified. The landscaping was planned with the help of Dr. Biron E. Decker, area adviser for vocational agriculture. The citation was presented "in appreciation of Union City schoo1's valuable contribution to the beautification of the community by making possible an outstandingly distinctive example of the art of landscaping." It was formed by the students who are enrolled in the Business Edu- cation Curriculum. At present we have 17 members. Requirements are: Successful completion of at least one business course 5 and being enrolled in the Business Educa- tion Curriculum. To form a chapter, it is necessary to start an F.B.L.A. club in your own school under the leadership of your business teacher. After you have 10 or more members you send their names along with dues to the national branch of F.B.L.A. under the sponsorship of the U.B.E.A. Dues are 35.50 per year. Besides having club meetings in which we talk over professional activities we also spend a considerable amount of time in social activity. We have had three quite successful dances for the student body. We also are working on a new project of making recipe books for the public which we hope to have completed by Easter. The first chapter of F.B.L.A. was started in 1942 and now there are over 1800 chapters in high schools and colleges. Sponsored by CAFLISCH BUILDERS SUPPLY ALTMAN 'S FARM SERVICE STORE SITTING: Y.
