Under Miss Martin, we started our first year, thirteen strong. The beginning
students were: Jed Burnau, Terry Bowman, Hal Platt, Robert Cayot, Helen Newhard,
Marilyn Harnish, Shirley Bumgarner, Dolores Willson, Alma Kumfer, Babe Eichhorn,
Jim Weikel, Lee Hoopingarner, and Paul Elliot. During the year Joan and Joe
Huffman joined us from Putt school and George Ertel from Rockcreek.
With Miss Martin still as our teacher, we started the second grade. There were
no newcomers, but Lee Hoopingarner left us at the end of the year to go to Rockcreek.
As we journeyed to the third grade, we found we had a new teacher, Mrs. Swank,
and when we entered the fourth grade we found Mrs. Eberhart was to be our
teacher. There were no newcomers during the third and fourth grades, but Alma
Kumfer left us in the third grade.
During the fifth year, with Miss Boyd as our teacher, Carl Anderson and Marilyn
Moore entered our class from Hillcrest, and Bill Gephart from Ossian.
Mrs. Hammond was our teacher for the sixth grade, with no newcomers that year.
In the seventh grade we had that wonderful sensation of being moved upstairs,
with Mr. Wall as our teacher. This year we received a new student, Eugene Norris
from Huntertown. We also lost a student, Dolores Willson, who moved to Huntertown.
In the eighth grade, Mr. AWall was still our teacher, with two newcomers,
Rosalyn Stahl from Markle and Shirley Perry from Fort Wayne. Shirley left us
at the end of that year.
The nineth grade rolled around and we had the wonderful feeling of being in
high school. This year's new students were Wilma Quinn and Barbara Ferguson.
At the end of the year Jim Weikel, Marilyn Harnish, and Wilma Quinn left
Union Center. '
