SENIOR CLASS HISTORY N A BEAUTIFUL September day ln 1941 a group of 32 green notes were J seen dancing up to the muslc room on second floor of Unldls I-llgh School to begln the1r Journey up the scale They Were greeted by Mlss Lotta Bond of the staff After a few weeks of becommg acquamted tour notes were chosen to gulde them through the com1ng year Whole note James Shep herd One half note George Moffett Quarter note Ruth Benedum One exghth note Mary Frances Kennedy Durlng the year the muslc notes and staff enJoyed a p1cn1c held ln Ward s field and a welner roast out at Kennedy s One of our be loved class mates MHTJOTIE Allman left us for matrlmony After cllmbrng a fourth way up the scale class was dlsmlssed for three months On September 7 1942 thlrty two members stlll retalned thelr enthuslasrn ln sufflclent amount to return to school A new note Austln Hlmes declded to Jom us thls year M1ss Bond cur very capable muslc teacher was back to help us on up the scale James Shepherd st1ll remalned the whole note but Jack Saurbourne was chosen the One half note Dorls Robey Quarter note two elghth notes Robert Frush and Lorralne Weekley Durlng our sophomore year we lost two ot our members Elma Jane Kelley and Mlldred Stutler The notes and staff had a Hallowe en party ln the gym and a p1cn1c at Laurel Park Plans were made for the next year and after cllmblng up the scale half way class was drsmlssed untll September On September 7 1943 the class seemed much brlghter and was notlced by everyone as belng very br1ll1ant Mlss Bond stlll remained our falthful teacher As offlcers of the class Jack Saurbourne was chcsen as whole note Blll Coffffln daffer half note Eugene Bowen quarter note Homer Mackey Robert Frush and George Moffett exghth notes We were very dlsappolnted when s1x of cur mem bers dld not return They were Lela Bates James Prlce Loyal Walker Austin Hlmes Ruth Bochert and James Shepherd who left for the navy Thls year we worked very hard to get enough money for the Junior Senlor Banquet We final ly made xt' And a very n1ce banquet was held at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel 1n May Durlng our Junlor year two new notes Joined us They were Dlck Whlt tmgton and Delbert Bauman Another ncte Betty Lou Morrlson left us and moved to Brlstol In the sprlng the class enjoyed a party held m the llbrary The annual Junior Play was Llfe Beglns At Slxteen It was a huge success One of our brllllant notes Homer Mackey was elected F F A State Reporter and won thlrfl prle ln the State Home Improvement contest Another note June Allman recelv ed the honor of being the best glrl cheerleader ln the sectlonal tournament held The Junlor boys won the hrgh school class tournament and recelved an t tra tlve trophy After a very busy year whlch took us three fourths the way up the scale we took a vacatlon for three months From a very successful Junlor year thls exceptional class came danclng back to school entermg the last lap-Semcrs We were happy to see the sm111ng face of MISS Bond when we entered Old Falthful on second floor on the mornlng ot September 7 Offlcers thls year were B111 Cofflndaffer whcle note Eugene Bow en one half note Ollve Adams quarter note Jack Saurbourne Mary Frances Kennedy Eleanor Lee Marcrum and Eugene Bowen elghth notes The new note this year was Imogene Wrrght who came from Washlngton Irvmg Hlgh Sch ol In the fall June Allman was chosen to represent the hlgh school as Prlncess to the Fall Festlval held at Salem College We lost four of our boys thls year to the Armed Servlces Bob Frush and Delbert Bauman to the Army Bob Davls to the Mercchant Marlne and Eugene Bowen to the Navy A party was held 1n the lrbrary and was enjoyed by everyone present Our class was named the Bond Class and Marchlng Progresslvely was chosen as cur motto We recelved our banner about the mlddle of the year The class recelved thelr rxngs early 1n the year and presented Mrss Bond with a pm to show our love and appreclatxon for her Eleanor Lee Marcrum and Mary Frances Kennedy were chosen our co V8,l6d1Ct0l'13llS and Alma Durbln our salutatorlan for the graduatlng class The last week of school was a very busy week for the notes and staff On Monday of May 21 was Class Day Fuesday Semor Examlnatwns Wednesday S6ll10I' Play whlch was very successful and enJoyed by all who saw lt Thursday nlght the JLllll0l' Senlor Banquet Friday Semor Faculty P1cn1c The Semor boys were very actlve 111 football and basketball Bob Davls and Jack Saurbourne were Cc Captalns ln football and James Lee Wllld0ll was Cap tam ln basketball Dlcr Whlttlngton B111 Coffmdalfer Homer Mackey Jack Saur bourne James Lee Wrndon and June Allman Cheerleader earned letters The Semor Class won a trophy for havlng the best cheerlng sectlon of th class tour nament On the nlght of Monday May the twenty eighth the twenty one notes of the Bond Class marched down the alsle to the sweet strams of plano musxc and recexved thelr dlplomas Some of them w1l1 COllt1l1ll8 thexr schoollng whlle oth ers will drxft lnto varlous occupatlons but they will always remember thelr hlgh school days Loud w1ll thelr pralses rmg for the staff who trxed to lead them and teach them
