For a hundred years the town and the school have grown together, and now they celebrate their anniversary together in this book. The production of this Echo has been made possible by the assistance and encouragement given us by our friends and patrons, we wish especially to express our appreciation to the Board of Edu' cation who were so liberal with their support and aid. This volume of the Echo contains no ad' vertisementsg however the names of those who so generously made financial contributions are list' ed elsewhere in the book, and we take this means of thanking them. sf o Q L - ' 4. The village was incorpor' ated in 1893 as Uhricksville, the spelling being modified in 1890 to its present form. These hundred years have witnessed many changes, not the least of them in the schools. At first a onefroom school sufficedg for a time, after a disastrous fire in 185 2, there was no school building at all. In 1867, with the election of a school board, the educational program was ex' panded to such a degree that six teachers were required, in 1874 a twelve' room building, the old Main Street building, was erected on the ground now occupied by the Central High School. At the present time there are three buildings occupied by 1709 pupils, who are instructed by a staff of 47 teachers. 26 aussi' 43? lu, A , f 39 + 9 if . 5 S35 UHLAN' - . -.-..., LP l 'UNEP FE Hu XX, t F Hu rrmmnrrr IM 'r "" ws' l-K.,-:wQ'g?:m41Qw4e..'v.fff?2Q A:j'g.4h'le, Q' Q 35' ii'-iTffr12'aw1"rf5f1'f:2sf' 4132 Q . After much hard practice Coach Query developed a green squad, with only four letter men, into a smoothfrunning eleven which defeated Bridgeport 12fO in the first game of the season, the following week the boys journeyed to Mingo junction, where they won by a 13'0 score. In the third start the strong Newark team held our boys to a 0'O tie. Cn October 14 we avenged the defeat which Millersburg gave us last year by defeating them in a close game. The fifth game, with Dennison, caused our first defeat, and the strong, undefeated Dover team in the next game forced our boys to take the short end of a long score. The Black and Gold defeated the Trojans of Newcomerstown in the next game, showing better form than they had in the couple preceeding games. The New Phila Quakers fthe "Wildcats" until Nov. 14, 19315 managed to come out with the winning end of the score but our boys fought every' minute until the final gun. They fought hard, too, in the last game of the season, when Coshcocton defeated us 38fO, showing true U, H. S. spirit, although they were outclassed by a heavier team. The Coshocton game was the final appearance in the Black and Gold uniform for johnson, Hartman, Creel, Morgan, Page, Fox, Myers, Smith, and Kopp, all good men whom the high school will miss sorely next year. We attribute the success of this season to Coach Query and to the scrappiest bunch of players who have ever worn the Black and Gold. The most important games of the regular schedule were with county teams. Dennison fell twice before our boys, while we defeated Phila once, and lost once by one point. Eastern Ohio District Tournament This was the high light of the basketball season, when the team reached the final game by defeating Zanesville, Toronto, and East Liver' pool, surpassing in tournament play any previous U. H. S. team. In the first game, with Zanesville, the defending champs, our boys outplayed them and won by the score of 3025. Next came Toronto, an' other mighty team, and again we won by a 3Of25 count. The clash be' tween the highly touted East Liverpool team and our boys furnished one of the biggest thrills of the whole tournament, when we won by one point, 28f27. In the final game, with Dover, we lost 32f26. Throughout the game the lead changed several times, and it was not decided until the final minute of play. The boys played hard, clean basketball throughout the season, especially in the tournament, as a result of which U. H. S. placed two men on the allftournament team, Hartman and Smythe. Miller made the second team, while Ben Westhafer was given honorable mention. Reserves In addition to having a good varsity this year, we had also a very good reserve team. After a poor start they got their stride, with eight wins in fifteen starts. Their best game of the season was their first encounter with New Phila, when they ran away with their opponents. 48 1. TRACY HARTMAN-Guard "One of the best allfround athletes ever in U. H. S.", was said about "Hap", as a result of the twelve letters he has made in four years. He made the allftournament team this year, an act that speaks for itself. Nex year's team will miss him. 2. DORWIN MYERS-Guard Although "Doofie" was unable to play the second semester, he was one of the mainstays of the team the first semester. His four years of varsity play will make him greatly missed next year. 3. JOE SMYTHE-Center "The best center U. H. S. has had for a long time", was said about Joe. His play in the tournament was so good as to give him a berth on the allftournament team. He will be a valuable asset to the varsity next year. 4. ROBERT MILLER-Forward One of the scrappiest on this year's team was Bob. When there was a free ball he usually got it, and he also made his share of points. He was awarded a place on the second allftournament team. He graduates this spring. 5 . BEN WESTHAFER--Guard In his first year of basketball Ben played well in all games and ref ceived honorable mention for the allftournament team. His best game was against Dennison, when he scored more than half the points. Ben is a junior l 51 6 JOHN BROWN-Forward Playing his first year of varsity, Johnnie showed up well. He could play any position with ease. This is .Iohnnie's last year. 7. NOILE WESTHAFER-Fonvard Like his cousin Ben, "Hank" was right there with the goods it takes to make a basketball player. He has another year in which to dis' tinguish himself. 8. ADRIAN MGRGAN-Forward This was "Gummy's" first year with the varsity. When he was in he was always fighting to the utmost. He graduates this spring. 9. BILL MELLOR-Manager Bill has been manager for four years, and to him goes much of the credit for keeping the boys and the equipment in shape. In addition, this year Bill played on the reserve basketball team. W. B. QUERY-Coach Th success, morale, and spirit of a team are reflected from the coach. Coach Query, in his first year in U. H. S., has produced clean, fighting teams, and he may look forward to contiued good fortune in his athletic groups. 52 U.H.S U.H.S U.H.S U.H.S U.H.S.
