In addition to being the silver anniversary year for the "German Raider" she also turned in a ree markable record during six months of combat operations against communist forces in Southeast Asia. Leaving San Diego on the twenty-seventh of January we departed on what proved to be a very rapid transit of the Pacific. Due to operational commit- ments we stopped briefly in Pearl Harbor and Subic Bay before going on plane guard duty on Yankee Station. The stern of the BON HOMME RICHARD was a familiar sight to us for nearly forty days. The most significant event while with the BONNIE DICK was our rescue of one of her men who was lost overboard while she was replenishing. After liberty and upkeep in Subic Bay we returned to the BONNIE DICK for a short time and then proceeded to make our first visit to Japan, stopping for repairs and liberty in Sasebo. The next assignment was to the II Corps area of South Viet Nam as naval gunfire support ship. This was the job we had all waited for and the days that followed our arrival in II Corps were not disappointing. Answering all calls we fired a total of 5, 884 rounds and spent many long hours shooting and rearming. After drawing high praise from the spotters for our accuracy and professional performance we reluctantly left the line and headed for Hong Kong. Following liberty in Hong Kong we traveled to Kaohsiung for tender repairs and liberty. Our next period on the line demonstrated that in spite of the fact that we are twenty-five years old we are still one of the most versatile ships in the Navy today. During this period we were as- signed to ,yprovide surface support for the LONG BEACH, plane guard for the BON HOIMME RICHARD and CONSTELLATION, and gunfire support ship the DMZ and I Corps areas. While serving as gunfire support ship we fired a total of 98 3 inch rounds-in four days. Following the gunline tour we headed for home and made stops infYokgo-suka, Midwayypwfand Pearl Harbor. On ll August we arrived in San Diego andiwerdey reunited family and friends. As the cruise came to 3, Close a ll hands felt the pride that COITTICS-'.'f1'OTI1 knowing that hard work on their part helped to make 1ili?ii5I'HLMANN'S,twenty'-fifth year one of the best since she was put into service in V - A .. ,,. . In addition to standing watches and maintaining the boilers the BTS were responsible for the below deck phases of refueling. ' Undoubtedly having the dirtiest job and possibly being the hardest working division on board, B division compiled the enviable record of six months hard steaming with no engineering casualties. Around the clock work by the BTS in repairing a tube failure while in Subic Bay enabled the ship to continue with her record of meeting all com mitments in West Pac. On one occasion when speed was an essential item the BTS managed to squeeze nearly twenty-nine knots out of two boilers for Several hours. ln summarizing the deployment the BTS can take great pride from the efforts they have turned in on this cruise. Only once was the ship required to slow due to an engineroom casualty and this was promptly corrected. I-lard work and a high degree of professional competence on the part of the Machinists' Mates enabled the UI-ILMANN to meet all of her commitments. In addition to being responsible for a great deal of machinery , the Machinists' Mates are also responsible for the operation of the evaporators. A highly capable group of Machinists' Mates, assisted by some equally competent BTS did an out- standing job of producing Water for the boilers and for the crew. Not once in the six month cruise did the ship go on Water hours, which is quite an accomplishment for a twenty-five year old destroyer with only one set of evaporators, The evapora- tor gang produced approximately l, 450, 800 gallons of feed water and 808, OOO gal- lons of fresh water during the cruise. The evaporators were on the line a total of 3, 200 hours for an average production of about 700 gallons per hour. In summary, M Division can be justifiably proud of the efforts they have put forth during the deployment. They put in a lot of long hours to keep all of their gear running and to aid the ship in meeting all her commitments. 7 5' , -ru 4--1::1.1-fw-3 H .. 55' 4- -x,.....,.- eglnm- g...... gum. .5 ' L ,L,.J- .,,.,, - ,i,..,,. .,,, m,u...m-,,......,.....,.,-.-..-..... if H Y , . --I-,,g.,ql.fIU.-5-1,fh..a.3 f ...Q -5 ,,..... -5, ...- w55,,,,,..,-1 ,,,,,., ,,- n , V .M - , Luch paints a steamline Keep 'em clean Checking lube Oil Slugging down on steam line K L a !, Q S 1 e L l 5 f - i I l --:md Y QQ N , HB Y Throttleman on sea detail Spinning main enginds Rough log 75375125 - gg "1 . - '. 3, ti..-eh , , -- ' , . -.4- H ,. f V ,. .,-- A . 1 ,,,, , ' ' ' "' ' 1 ' ' f ' ' ' '3 H ' -- '12 ' v ' ' .- f' L w 0" Z. ," P :.1".9--ug" 12 fy- -. . The work done by these men never ended. As soon as they could get one piece of gear squared away they would immediately have to move on to another one In addition to their repair work, R division also assisted in helo details and while we were on the gunline their repair party manned one of the three inch gun mounts R Division work from the l968 West Pac deployrnent will probably continue for some time after our return to the States because it will take them a good deal of time to get the UHLMANN ship shape following six and a half months of heavy steaming and shooting. 19 3 0 - ! w O Q --.--.-1-,L ..-v ----- v---,-v...--- -----H if-W wf- - ---- f - f- irq V L X Machine shop ' Happiness is the rack P I Rep airing battle lantern - ,...,-Em.-.-f ,,..... f,..,...n-:..-. OC I Division was responsible for all communications, both voice and visual. Over the I six and one half month period a total of seventy-five thousand messages passed through the UI-lLM.ANN'S Message Center. In order to. give a better idea of just how I much traffic this amounted to that would have been enough to cover an area of about 3, sixteen acres with quarter inch type. In addition to the messages received over the teletypes, the Signal Bridge handled close to eight thousand messages or an average , of over thirteen hundred messages per man. In addition to the radiomen and signal- I I , I M men, the Hospital Corpsmen also are in OC Division. Fortunately the corpsmen did I not have any major injuries to contend with during the deployment. However, they 4" were kept busy fighting the flu and treating minor injuries. On one occasion a small Vietnamese boy was brought aboard with a Wound in his hand. The corpsmen respon ded quickly and showed they were capable of handling an emergency under adverse II conditions in treating the boy. As was true throughout the ship, OC Division can be proud of their highly professional performance. IIII I MI , ' II' . I I I III ,I Ia! The Yeomen and per- sonnelmen maintain the Ship's Office and are responsible for the bulk of paperwork carried out on board. Of special interest to the rest of the crew should be the fact that Ship's Office processed over three thousand special request chits while we were deployed. The Quartermasters assisted in navigating the German Raider over ap- proximately 53, 061 miles during the deploynaent. The Quartermasters were also responsible for handling all of the Weather reports the ship received. Perhaps the most important contribution of the Quartermaster gang was their accurate fixing of the sh1p's position While We were on the gunline After overcoming seemingly un surmountable obstacles, the Quartermasters consistently came up with accurate positions enabling the gunfire provided by the German Raider to be right on target Also in ON Division is a lone Photographer's Mate who is responsible for taking and developing nearly all of the pictures in this book 3 v. ...H,,,.., , I , - ,,,- H. , 'A L . 2- i. - T- r +-- . . -'-ja gg:"'s" f.g::rj,- Vw'311'57mmun'A'z11mn+:mmxmu1ummu,munuw4m.,.....m....-.mm .,,. I The varied responsibilities of the Supply Department did much to make our work easier and more enjoyable. The services provided by the Supply Department included T all messing, laundry and ship's store services, pay for the crew, and procurement of vital repair parts. The Supply Department prepared over ten thousand pounds of beef, more than forty thousand pounds of potatoes. Approximately four hundred thousand dollars in pay was handled by the Disbursing Clerks. The efforts of the Supply Department are not always appreciated because so many of their services become so much a part of the everyday routine on board ship. However, as we look back on six and a half months of hard steaming it is quite evident that the hours would have been a lot longer without the conveniences provided by the Supply Depart- ment. In particular special mention should go to the UI-ILMANN bakers who without 'Y a doubt are some of the best in the fleet. Their daily pastries and bread helped to T , provide a touch of home that few ships are fortunate enough to have. Many members 55 of other divisions saw long hours of service in the Supply Department as mess cooks d an can better appreciate the work that went into making the chow and supply serviceS as good as possible. 9 J ' ' , l X V ., .. .. .V . ... .. ., .... ,, . 1- ., . . 1 . - .- .f-- , . f 'N --'.-.1 U.. ..-.... Row 2: Baldovin, TMS, Canada, STG3g Wengrzynek, STG3g Graham, STG3g Neitzel, STG3. The AS Division probably had one of the most trying jobs on board. Due to the nature of the Vietnamese war there is very little, if any, call for antisubmarine operations. However, as is characteristic of the U.-S. Fleet, we must stand ready for any emer- gency. As a result the men of AS Division had to maintain their highly sensitive gear in top condition at all times even though they realized that there probably would be little call for it. ln addition to maintaining their gear, the AS Division assisted in manning the director and gun mounts and over the deployment made a total of one hundred and twenty-five BT drops. During a brief period of ASW operations the UHLMANN made a fine showing, often holding submarine for longer periods than the ships with newer and more powerful sonars. AS Division proved to be a hard working division, confident that if ever called on they could carry the load. as l Tools of the trade Cleaning the hog pen fn n U n-I .,,..., . .A ,,.......,- lm V, .--::'gLL11.Z.i-nu..-UQ, -,5g.. ,:.:-g'7.,L.- 3. x-f:A1..n--- ':"'::i2:1.4.-, . Fox Division is composed of Gunner's Mates and Fire Control Technicians. Fox Division had an excellent deployment and while on the gunline they proved to all that they are among the best. Around the clock work by the Gunner's Mates was neces- Sary to keep the guns in top condition on the line. Although we had close to fifty minor casualties with the gun mounts while we were shooting we never failed to answer a call for fire, thanks to the hard work of the Gunner's Mates. The FTS were in charge of plotting all target solutions on the ship's fire control computer. AS a part of the overall gunfire support team the FTS never let the rest of the group down. They were always ready with timely and accurate solutions. At one point, UHLMANN was assigned to clear a landing zone with many rounds of ammunition on two Separate targets in a very short period. Normally a destroyer can only take one target under fire at a time. However, the Fire Control Technicians on UHLMANN devised a method of control to split the five inch battery and'br.ing rapid continuous fire on both targets at the same time. Efforts such as this distinguished Fox Division and UHLMANN while on the line. .m, ---f----1-'I --' ' - ' 6lQlBMUH ::1TAg+nn---f-- ,, -----? xr- ,..-W---...--f - 'WI 1 1 l x ! , 1 Turning to 'on three inch mounts GUHHGI S MHYCS and friend The crew Cleanmg the penthoube 1 F w '4 i 1 i ,w H '1 I I I 1 I 1 N 1 W F w 1 I Y ,lx :lf v I w Q e-A This is how we hand rammed Zap, I got you Watch in plot Gunner and his strikers as Maintenance on the three inch mounts The bean bandit FOX backbone Answering the call DECK DIVISION Row 1: Field, SN, Finney, SN, Spencer, SN, Ford, SN, Napoleon, SN, Irelan, SN, Row 2: Willing, SA, Iverson, SA, Hammond, SA, Keohokapu, SA, Johnson, SN. Deck Division was responsible for most of the stations on bridge Watches as well as manning many of the Watches in the gun mounts. In ad- dition to these Watch billets, Deck Division was also responsible for rigging for all of the underway replenishments, manning the helo details and anchor details, and stand- ing watches in after steering. The amount of work performed by this division is evi- dent from the fact that UHLMANN had one hundred and forty helo details, forty re- fuelings, twelve rearmings, eight replenishments and fifty-one anchor details. The largest job of all for Deck Division began when they were not on watch and not mann- ing special details. This job consisted of maintaining nearly all of the topside spaces on the ship. The Boatswains' Mates spent many long hours keeping these space in top condition in spite of long periods of time at sea. Without a doubt all of the men in Deck Division will remember with pride, the long hours spent in doing their part to complete a successful deployment. 55 .. --9""1,I,,,. f 41.5355 i f:::::-.,.,--H 1:. af ,sn A I' -.- --123551f'fi:::r.1.L,.,,f,,-5 -gg-:ml-.-,,,,1. DEDICATIGN The dedication of this book is to the ship and many men who have served on it dur- ing twenty-five years of service. Although it is the standard procedure for the dedi- cation to precede the text of a book, in this case it is more fitting for the dedication to come at the close of the book. Thus, the reader can better realize the reason for dedicating the book to the ship and her crew. The UI-ILMANN has seen service in the Second World War, the Korean Conflict, and the Viet Nam Conflict. The recent de- ployment to the Western Pacific wa's a vivid example that, after nearly twenty-five years, the German Raider can still steam and shoot with any ship in the fleet. The primary reason for this has been the hard work of the crew in maintaining the ship in top fighting condition. As a small reward for this devotion to duty this book is dedicated to the UI-ILMANN and her crew, in hopes that it will be a reminder to all hands of a job well done. 4 P . ' -' 1 ' uamsg-a...1..u..
