The picturesque Presidio of Monterey, first a Spanish and Mexican military establishment, has its history interwoven with that of the nation and of California. In 1917 the Gigllng Reservation, comprising 15,809 acres of sage brush and dwarf oak trees, was purchased as an artillery impact area for training soldiers stationed at the Presidio of Monterey. Named in honor of Ma[or General Edward Cresap Ord, who as a young second lieutenant was prominent in the early history of the region. Port Ord was originally activated in 1940 under command of the late and renowned General Joseph W. Stilwell, known and beloved to thousands as " Vinegar Joe. " Countless thousands of America ' s young men received training at Fort Ord during the years of World War II. Upon cessation of hostilities the Port was maintained as a military replacement center, but no large scale operations were undertaken on its 28,000 acres until July 1947 when the famous Fourth Infantry Division was reactivated. In October 1950, the Fourth Division left Fort Ord for Fort Banning, Georgia. It was replaced by the Sixth Infantry Division, comprised of some of the oldest units in the history of the nation, the 1st, 20th and 63rd Infantry Regiments, Fort Ord is one of the 10 military establishments in the United States where Infantry basic training is conducted. i INFANTRY DIVISION The Sixth Division was originally organized November 26, 1917, at Camp McClellan, Alabama, After winning battle honors during World War I in Alsace, Meuse and the Argonne, it was inactivated at Camp Grant, Illinois, September 30, I 92 1 In October 1939 the Sixth was reactivated at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was redesignated the Sixth Motorized Division April 9, S 942 , and was later re- named the Sixth Infantry Division May 21,1 943. After World War II servfce in New Guinea and Luzon, the unit was inactivated in Korea January 1 0, 1949. At the outbreak of the present emergency, the Sixth Infantry Division was returned to active service in October, 1950, at Fort Ord, California. The First Infantry Regiment, one of the nation ' s oldest fighting units, was first constituted March 3, 1791. Its men have participated in every war + in which our country has been engaged since that time. The regiment was assigned to the Sixth Infantry Division in October 1939. The 20th Infantry Regiment was originally organized as the Second Battalion, I 1 5th Infantry Regiment, for Civil War service May 4, 1861. It was expanded to the 20th Infantry Regiment in 1918. The 2 Of b was assigned to the Sixth Division in October 1939. The 63rd Infantry Regiment was organized in May 1917. It was demobilized in July 1922, and activated for World War II service in May 1941 , at which time if was made a part of the Sixth Division. The three Infantry regiments were deactivated in Korea in Janu- ary I949 r along with the Sixth Division. Similarly the three units were reactivated at Fort Ord, October 1950. The division artillery oF the Sixth Infantry Division joined the unit at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in Octo- ber 1940. At present the division artillery supervises the Specialist Schools and the Leaders Course which are part of the division train- ing program. yy» 1 l? Sfc WP !om faiu Isdl |§ajP . The picturesque Presidio of Monterey, first a Spanish and Mexican military establishment, has its history interwoven with that of the nation and of California. In 1917 the Gigling Reservation, comprising 15,809 acres of sage brush and dwarf oak trees, was purchased as an artillery impact area for training soldiers stationed at the Presidio of Monterey. Named in honor of Major General Edward Cresap Ord, who as a young second lieutenant was prominent in the early history of the region, Fort Ord was originally activated in 1940 under command of the late and renowned General Joseph W. Stilwell, known and beloved to thousands as " Vinegar Joe. " Countless thousands of America ' s young men received training at Fort Ord during the years of World War II. Upon cessation of hostilities the Fort was maintained as a military replacement center, but no large scale operations were undertaken on its 28,000 acres until July 1947 when the famous Fourth Infantry Division was reactivated. In October 1950, the Fourth Division left Fort Ord for Fort Benning, Georgia. It was replaced by the Sixth Infantry Division, comprised of some of the oldest units in the history of the nation, the 1st, 20th and 63rd Infantry Regiments. Fort Ord is one of the 10 military establishments in the United States where Infantry basic training is conducted. The Sixth Division was originally organized November 26, 1917, at Camp McClellan, Alabama. After winning battle honors during World War I in Alsace, Meuse and the Argonne, it was inactivated at Camp Grant, Illinois, September 30, 1921. In October 1939 the Sixth was reactivated at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was redesignated the Sixth Motorized Division April 9, 1942, and was later re¬ named the Sixth Infantry Division May 2 1, 1943. After World War II service in New Guinea and Luzon, the unit was inactivated in Korea January 10, 1949. At the outbreak of the present emergency, the Sixth Infantry Division was returned to active service in October, 1950, at Fort Ord, California. The First Infantry Regiment, one of the nation ' s oldest fighting units, was first constituted March 3, 1791. Its men have participated in every war in which our country has been engaged since that time. The regiment was assigned to the Sixth Infantry Division in October 1939. The 20th Infantry Regiment was originally organized as the Second Battalion, I 15th Infantry Regiment, for Civil War service May 4, 1861. It was expanded to the 20th Infantry Regiment in 1918. The 20th was assigned to the Sixth Division in October 1939. The 63rd Infantry Regiment was organized in May 1917. It was demobilized in July 1922, and activated for World War II service in May 1941, at which time it was made a part of the Sixth Division. The three Infantry regiments were deactivated in Korea in Janu¬ ary 1949, along with the Sixth Division. Similarly the three units were reactivated at Fort Ord, October 1950. The division artillery of the Sixth Infantry Division joined the unit at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in Octo- , , O ber 1940. At present the division artill ery supervises the Specialist jjjjEWT Schools and the Leaders Course jfe which are part of the division train- 2BL_ n g program. caaMtittL-.wvi Division Headquarters Barracks Area rri Blj»rrrnrgfciir n P » ' " » M ’T rrr ri HEADQUARTERS 6B INFANTRY DIVISION |Q I ‘ t ' ■ - gjinrcTEninr Soldiers Club Theater Field House f IlffSTf III |i !!| 1 HI l|| II ' A 1 ill!
