MAJOR IGENERAL WILLIAM L.MITCHELL Commanding General Mai. Gen. William Lemuel Mifchell was born 6 Dec. I897, in Mandville, La. Afler graduafion from lhe Uniled Sfales Milifary Academy, Wesf Poinl, N. Y., in I92O, he was commissioned a second Iieufenanl in lhe Infanfry. He received his firsf Iieufenancy soon aflerward. He ,las been awarded fhe Legion of Merif fwice, fhe lasf fime for services in Korea. This award is given for Hexceplionally meriforious conducf in fhe performance of oulslanding services and sfems from lhe Badge for Milifary Merif, America's oldesf decorafion. I General Milchell was assigned as a sfudenf af The lnfanfry School, Forl Benning, Ga.. and complefed fhe basic course in June of I92I. He fhen ioined 'rhe 33d Infanfry af Forf Jay. N. Y., and lafer served wifh lhaf organizafion af Forf Clayfon, Canal Zone. Afferward, he ioined fhe Headquarfers Delachmenf Panama Canal Division, where he subsequenfly served as aide-de-camp fo Mai. Gen. William Lassifer. In July, I923, he accompanied General Lassifer fo Forf Amador, Canal Zone. In Seplember, I924, General Mifchell was assigned wifh fhe 22d Infaniry al Forf McPherson, Ga., and fhree years lafer became assisfanf professor of Milifary Science and Tacfics and adiufanl af Louisiana Slafe Universify, Bafon Rouge. Five years lafer he re-enferecl The lnfanfry School af Forf Benning, Ga., and complefed fhe 'rank course. He fhen was assigned as company commander and infelligence and execulive officer of fhe 66lh lnfanfry al' Forf Meade, Md. In June, l95O, he was named chief of civil hisforical secfion and in fhe following monfh he became chief of The milifary personnel division. In December, l950, he was appoinled execufive officer of fhe personnel secfion fhere. General Mifchell was lransferred fo Bfh Army Headquarfers in Korea in February, I95l, and fhe following monlh became depuly commander of fhe IX Corps in Korea.
