In May 1815, the 13th was consolidated with the 5th Infantry Regiment, but it saw no more active service until the Mexican War in 1848. Reconstituted in May 1861, with General W. T. Sherman as its commanding general, the re iment began its record of continuous service during all American wars. 9 It was after the assault on Vicksburg when the officers and men of the 13th won for the regiment the motto it still retains. Their valor so impressed General Ulysses S. Grant that he decreed the regiment should be permitted to carry on its colors from that day forward, First at Vicksburg. When war broke out in Spain in 1898, the 13th was assigned to the lst Infantry Division. After completing its duties in Cuba, it was sent to the Philip- ines in May 1899 where it took an active part in the campaign. P , Between 1900 and 1917, the 13th was stationed once in Alaska and twice in the Philippine Islands, where it remained until the outbreak of World War I, but it did not go into battle during the war. The regiment was activated again as a part of the 8th Division in August 54 1950, at Fort Iackson, S. C. The regiment remained at Iackson until May 19 , when it moved to Camp Carson, Colorado. Battle honors were won by the 13th in the North Dakota and Montana Indian Wars of 1866 and 1868, as well as the Mississippi River, Vicksburg, Mississi i, Tennessee and Chattanooga battles of the Civil War.
