AV-8B HARRIER IN HOVER The first of the six jets to embark TARAWA hovers prior to landing. BRING IT ON! PACKING TARAWA FOR WAR IS NOT FOR THE PAINT OF HEART! On the 7th of January, one day into our cruise, we embarked the bulk of the 15th Meu. Throughout the day, the flight deck and well deck worked non-stop to bring on the Marine fighting force. The LCUS and LCACs were loaded at the beach near Camp Pendleton, then brought out the Marines and their equipment, while CH-53s and CH-46s flew out with full loads. Combat Cargo hand its hands full, unloading every- thing and everyone from both the well deck and the flight deck, while simultaneously packing the upper and lower V's for the expected off-load in the Northern Arabian Gulf. Tired but satisfied with a ob well done, TARAWA was off to Hawaii, making good speed for our first port, and knowing that we had truly begun our WESTPAC deploy- ment.
