K TARAWA's 2003 deploy- ment is one that none of us could forget. Enroute to the Northern Arabian Gulf, our visit to Hawaii was scaled down to a tantalizing view of the coast. We did man- age a couple days of liberty in Singapore, giving us a much needed boost in mo- rale prior to racing west. It would be the last liberty for TARAWA for 107 days! We entered the Persian Gulf on the 6th of February, Constantly practicing Gen- eral Quarters and MOPP drills. On the edge of war, the 15th MEU off-loaded ...,. 4--.....f with their equipment, de- termination andbestwishes from its Navy crew. These Ma- rines are getting their first look at their home-away-from-home! CH-53E ON SHORT FINAL A This Super-Stallion from HMM-161 is bringing troops and supplies in mass quantities via the flight deck. AV-8B HARRIER IN HOVER The first of the six jets to embark TARAWA hovers prior to landing. BRING IT ON! PACKING TARAWA FOR WAR IS NOT FOR THE PAINT OF HEART! On the 7th of January, one day into our cruise, we embarked the bulk of the 15th Meu. Throughout the day, the flight deck and well deck worked non-stop to bring on the Marine fighting force. The LCUS and LCACs were loaded at the beach near Camp Pendleton, then brought out the Marines and their equipment, while CH-53s and CH-46s flew out with full loads. Combat Cargo hand its hands full, unloading every- thing and everyone from both the well deck and the flight deck, while simultaneously packing the upper and lower V's for the expected off-load in the Northern Arabian Gulf. MARINES 2, I he Sailors and Marines of the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department are known for keeping aircraft in top shape but they also play a much larger role in ensuring Tarawa s mission accomplishment. The Management Division CIMOD includes the Maintenance Officer and his primary staff. They are responsible for the administration of AIMD and control of more that S25 million in support equipment assets. The Airframes Division CIMOZJ conducts intermediate maintenance on aircraft systems including: flight control surfaces fuselages tires and wheels hydraulic systems and power plants. IM02 also takes care of aircrew survival gear and analyzes engine oil. The Avionics and Calibration Division CIMOBJ conducts intermediate maintenance on many systems, including aircraft avionics, communication, navigation, multi-function display systems, electrical wiring and lighting systems, calibration, circuit cards, and Armament Weapons Support Equipment. The Support Equipment Division CIMOLD is responsible for maintenance and repair of all 'white' and 'yellow' support equipment and material handling equipment. Flight Quarters! All hands man your flight quarters stations! That was the daily call to duty for the men and women of the fleet's finest Air Department - a challenge answered with pride and professionalism. Our 2003 deployment included many long, hot and tiring days and nights. At one point, almost a month went by of continuous flight quarters! The madness never stopped from the day we departed San Diego until the day we returned. V-1 Division expertly spotted, launched andyrecovered aircraft thousands and thousands of times throughout the deployment. Taxiing AV-8B Harriers around the flight deck and launching them off the bow was a common early morning wake-up for our shipmates. The Crash and Salvage crew, a specialized part of V-1, endured endless days and nights in their hot crash suits, remaining vigilant in case of a flight deck emergency. V-3 Division continuously moved aircraft and gear around the hangar, and to and from the elevators in support of the Aviation Combat Element's flight schedule, maintenance requirements, and Marine training requirements. V-4 Division continued to set the standard for both quality and quantity of IP-5 fuel pumped to the flight deck. CC Division maintains all interior communications, navigation, and alarm systems. The ICs also keep the ship's Closed Circuit TV system up and running. CE Division maintains all air traffic control, search and navigation radars, navigational aids, weather equipment, exterior communications systems and message processing equipment. They also maintain exterior phone systems tactical data systems information systems and test equipment and perform micro-miniature repair. CF D1v1s1on keeps Tarawa and her crew out of harm s way through meticulous maintenance of all missile gun and fire control radar systems. CI Division maintains Tarawa s automated information systems. This includes NIPRNET SIPRNET IMCIS SUADPS and OMMS-NG. These systems allow the crew to surf the Web send email within and off of the ship and requisition supplies. CR D1v1s1on maintains all electronic communications including both satellite and radio equipment. The men and Women of Tarawa's Deck Department proved they were no different from their predecessors: they courageously performed tough tasks in the spirit of the sea service's most basic traditions. With salt Water in their veins and an eye on the horizon, representatives of the Navy's oldest rate, the Boatswain's Mates, stood watch at the helm, operated the boats, dropped the anchor, and kept the ship looking as sharp as her crew. The sailors of First Division are in charge of the fo'c'sle and anchors. They operated Station 1-Bravo during Replenishment At Sea CRASD evolutions and assisted with mooring operations. Second Division supports Navy and Marine Corps amphibious operations from the Well Deck and handles mooring evolutions. Without the Machinist's Mates, Enginemen, Electrician's Mates, Damage Controlmen, Hull Maintenance Technicians, and Machinery Repairmen, the crew wouldn't have the basic necessities for quality of life - and the ship wouldn't have the means to be combat ready. A Division makes the ship comfortable for the rest of the crew. Without the hard work of "A-gang," the crew would be without creature comforts such as air conditioning, refrigerated food, clean laundry, heads, and hot showers. The men and women of E Division maintain the entire electrical power supply for the ship. They keep the lights on and our equipment running. R Division is a diverse group of sailors that provides firefighting expertise, creates critical machine parts from scratch, and corrects our plumbing problems. The hard working MP-1 and MP-2 Divisions have perhaps the toughest jobs on the ship: maintaining and operating the ship's massive boilers and auxiliary systems, including the fresh water supply system. Tarawa s Sailors give 100 X to run and fight the ship and her Medical team enables them to do it with the best health care in the fleet. Any sign of sickness in a member of the crew is a potential reduction in overall ship s readiness and that s why Tarawa s doctors and corpsmen work so hard at keeping the crew healthy. On this deployment Medical had to manage the unforgettable Anthrax series of shots as well as Smallpox and some verynasty ship-wide Crud. Tarawa embarked a great many augments nurses and doctors standing by in case of the return of mass casualties from the beach. RIGHT PLACE The Navigation Division is one of Tarawa's most valuable assets underway. They get us to the right place, at the right time for operations and liberty. Consisting of Signalmen and Quartermasters, Navigation conforms to today's smaller, more flexible Navy. . The Signalmen are responsible for all visual communications, including flashing light, flag hoist, and semaphore. SMS play a pivotal role inthe safe steaming of the ship since they are the most knowledgeable and experienced lookouts aboard. Quartermasters are solely responsible for ensuring that Tarawa remains clear of all hazards to navigation, including shoal water, shipwrecks, mine fields and various man-made objects. y The Ms must know the exact location of the shi at all times . H The Mess Specialists in the Enlisted Dining Facility provided excellent meals each dayfor every Sailor and Marine on board, making S-2 one of the most visible divisions. H Sales Division CS-33 operated the Eagle Emporium and Gator Express, the barber shops, laundry service and vending machines. Profits from sales go to MWR, furthering the crew's quality of life. S-4 Division consistsof the Post Office and Disbursing, handling and truly unbelievable amount of mail, and keeping that tax-free moneyflowing to us! y t r . Hotel Tarawa C is run by S-5 Division, as is the Chief Petty Officerfs Mess and the Wardroom. The Gunner's Mates are responsible for maintaining the ship's armory and issuing Weapons for training or operations. The also train TaraWa's Sailors on Weapons in the small arms inventory. Their organizational leadership was the glue that held together the three ships, Marine Expeditionary Unit and associated supporting commands. The mission of CPR-7 is to prepare plans, embark amphibious forces, conduct rehearsals, movements and assaults upon hostile shores in support of national policy during low intensity conflicts, and as a component of an integrated battle force during major conflicts. The squadron is divided into detachments that deploy with ARGS and Carrier Battle Groups in support of SAR, MED EVAC, PAXfMailfCargo transfers. Typically, HC-l l supports 2-3 deployed detachments at any one time. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, HC-ll deployed 7 detachments operating at full capabilities in support of military operations throughout The Gulf. When someone speaks of Det 7, the 21 maintainers come to mind first. Maintaining aircraft that are older than most of the men and women working on them leaves you speechless. Without these true professionals, the aircraft would not leave the flight deck. During the 6 months we have been deployed, they have completed 12 phase inspections, 6 engine changes, 4 rotor heads, l aft transmission change, and corrected over 2600 aircraft discrepancies. They are truly the back bone and driving force of Det. 7 which allowed the safe and timely completion of all assigned missions. It was once said, that when the aircraft needed maintenance done, it looked like an Army of Ants all over the aircraft until the job was complete". That's how we do business. During Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom, the detachment flew in excess of 1200 hours. A milestone which has not been matched or set until Det. 7 patrolled the sky. With only two HH-46D helicopters, we transferred 2600 passengers, 30 tons of mail, 600 tons of cargo and 30 Medevacs, and one rescue of a Man over-board. If you ask any of us, why we choose to do this type of j ob, you may not get the typical response you were expecting. For many of us it's knowing that we could save a precious life, the thrill of flying, or simply the pride of belonging to a winning team. Their purpose is to detect and dispose of live and inert ordnance that may pose a hazard to friendly and! or non- combatant personnel. In simplistic terms, they blow things up, while making their best efforts to avoid being blown up themselves. Items of interest include suspected or actual sea mines, land mines, missiles, rockets, explosive shells and bombs. Operation Iraqi Freedom gave this EOD team a rare chance to employ their skills in a real-world environment. In addition to these risky duties, EOD stood at the ready during flight operations when ordnance was not expended by the aircraft and brought back to the ship. If anything were to go wrong, these experts would have ensured the safety of personnel, aircraft, and the ship. Made up of one officer and three enlisted Marines, they control some of the most important work onboard. Tarawa's central mission throughout its history has been the successful delivery of Marines to the beach, and Combat Cargo is responsible for getting them there, along with their supplies and equipment. In order to accomplish this, Combat Cargo is given a Work force of over 50 Marines from the embarked MEU in order to load and unload the helicopters, LCACS and LCUS for transport. Due to the nature of this work, tight coordination must be maintained with Ballast Control to keep the ship in trim, as Well as with a host of Navy and Marine Corps command elements.
