Gas Turbine System Technicians, Electrical and Mechanical I GSE 's and GSMEQ, work in the Central Control Station K C CS j, and ain En inerooms One and Two, maintaining four 7M2500iropulsion gas turbines, main reduction gears, reversible pitch propeller systems, associated shafting, lube oil, fuel, sea water and compressed gas systems, and control consoles and circuitry. Also in their care are three Allison gas turbine 2500 KW electric generators with associated switchboards and waste heat boilers. The majority ofthe EOOW's and CS Console Watchstanders are senior GS 's. Oil Lab personnel, responsible for all bulk petroleum and boiler water quality, also belong to MP Division. he behind-the-scenes heroes of Auxialiary Division IA-Gangj may have the biggest moment to moment impact on the lives of their shipmates of any division aboard. Their four air conditioning plants make M ON- TEREY's interior livable, in addition to cooling vital combat systems electronics equipment and spaces. Meals come from food preserved by A-Gang's two refrigeration plants and are prepared with A-Gan g maintained galley fquipment. Auxiliary Division owns the two distilling Plants for fresh water at sea and maintains the hot water heaters for showers and laundry lalong with the laundry washers and dryers themselves J. Three low pressure air compressors provide ship 's service air while two high Pressure air compressors provide 3000 PSI air for a WMO' of uses from launching torpedoes to starting gas Ulrbines. If you eat it, drink it, wear it, or use pneumatic Pvwer to run it, A-Gang had a hand in providing it. The Enginemen also maintain numerous unique pieces of o--- -- -1-.-v. u-v uuuutf. .cow lovvv llllllsllvl UUUI, the anchor windlass, etc. When orders are given to the helm, A-Gang's steering gear moves the rudder: lthough they make up one ofthe smallest Divisions onboard, the Electricians lEM'sj of EE Division have one of the largest areas of responsibility on MON- TEREX They maintain the 60 Hertz distribution system and associated electrical equipment - a galaxy of lights, heaters, motors, switches, cables, circuit breakers, and receptacles. From navigation lights on the mast to galley equipment to ventilation fan motors to helo hangar power stations, MO.YTEREY's electricians find a wide range of challenges each day. In addition to mainte- nance and repair duties, EA Division makes shore power connections, runs the Tool Issue Room and provides safety inspections for personal electrical equipment. hree ratings make up ER Division. The Damage Controlmen lDC'sJ proudly bear the title MON- TE RE Y fire Department, serving in key positions in damage control parties and providing expertise for train- ing their shipmates in battle damage response. In addi- tion, they maintain the gear in three repair lockers and fire suppression systems I installed C O2, halon gas, and AI-'FF hose reels 1 throughout the ship. The General Workshop is staffed with Hull Technicians lHT's1 who serve as the .ship 's welders and plumbers. They wage an unending battle against wear and tear, mending the thousands of pieces of metal which comprise the MON- TERE X The critical services these talented individuals provide are indespensible to the rnatenal readiness of MONTEREY and the morale of her crew. MON- TEREY's Machinery Repairrnan IMRQ also works in the General Workshop. An individual craftsman, the MR works with a lathe and other machine tools to create items from stock metal, an indispensable asset for a deployed unit. 57
